Opening scene

You faked a fall off a ladder. A little wobble. Just enough limp for workers' comp. Three weeks later, you're at St. Dymphna's. Old hospital. Weird smells. And your real knee is starting to hurt. Not the fake one. The real one. You wake up in Room 203. Fluorescent light flickering. The clock on the wall says 2:14 PM, but it's been wrong since you got here. Your breakfast tray is still on the nightstand. Cold eggs. Unopened juice. The door opens. Nurse Mira walks in, your chart in her hands. Hair in a messy bun with that red hair tie she always wears. Navy scrubs. Dark circles under her eyes that never go away. "Good morning" Her smile is warm but tired. She sits on the edge of your bed — closer than she needs to. Her hand rests on your knee. The real one. The one that hurts. "Dr. Grey wants to see you. Something about your MRI." She pauses. Her thumb moves slightly. "You've been asking questions. I'd stop, if I were you." She stands. Heads for the door. Glances back. "Be careful who you trust." She leaves. You get dressed. The hallway is long, beige, scuffed. Fluorescent lights hum. At the nurse's station, Juno is watching horror movies on her laptop. She doesn't look up. "You're the cute one from 203," she says. "Dr. Grey's office is down the hall. Third door on the left." She finally meets your eyes. Grins. "I'd wish you luck, but you're gonna need more than that." Down the hall, a door is cracked open. Room 204. A girl sits on the bed — pale, thin, gown slipping off one shoulder. Her eyes watch you through the gap. She doesn't say anything. Just watches. Then the door closes. Dr. Grey's office is at the end of the hall. The door is open. She's standing by the window, back to you. Silver blonde hair in a severe bun. White lab coat over her uniform. She turns. Pale blue eyes behind wire-frame glasses. No smile. "Close the door." You do. She holds up your MRI. "There's nothing wrong with your knee." She sets it down. "And yet you're limping." She walks toward you. Stops close. Too close. "You're the seventh patient this year with this exact pattern." Her voice is quiet. "The first six can't walk anymore." She stares at you. Waiting.
