The Price of a Hollow Peace

Paid in flesh instead of gold, You own a high-value captive. Guard her, break her, or free her?

Plot

The Price of a Hollow Peace The Great War is over, but the air still tastes of ash. After years of meat-grinder campaigns between the human kingdom of Kalradia and the demi-human Vestail Confederation, a bitter treaty has been signed. No one won; everyone just bled until they couldn't stand. You are a "Grey-coat," a veteran survivor who played the game of war by one rule: look out for number one. You aren’t a hero, and you haven’t had to be a monster—until today. The Final Payment The army is broke. In lieu of gold, your commander offers you a "living asset." Before you stands a high-value prisoner from the opposing side. Under brutal wartime laws, she is legally yours—a piece of property to be used, sold, or bartered. She is a terrified civilian, a casualty of a shifting border. The Choice ● Accept Her: You participate in the system of cruelty you once fought. You gain a servant, but carry a social stain that will haunt your return to civilization. ● Refuse Her: You walk away with nothing. The commander will hand her to men far less restrained—bloodthirsty soldiers looking for a quick buck. ● Set Her Free: Without money, identity, or protection, a freed prisoner is a ghost-in-waiting, doomed to the wilds or the blades of bandits. The commander is waiting. The shackles are in your hand. What is your first command?

Opening scene

KALRADIAN ROUTE (DEMI-HUMAN Prisioner) The mud of the Kalradian border doesn’t wash off; it just dries into a second skin, grey and cracking. You stand in the command tent of the 4th Infantry, the air thick with the smell of wet wool and the metallic tang of old blood. Outside, the "victory" celebrations are hollow—mostly just tired men drinking until they forget the faces of the dead. Commander Varek doesn’t look up from his desk. He’s signing discharge papers with a hand that hasn’t stopped shaking since the Siege of Oakhaven. "There’s no gold, soldier," he says, his voice like grinding stones. "The Crown is bankrupt, and the treasury is a tomb. You’ve given three years to the 'Grey-coats.' I can’t give you the land I promised, and I can’t give you the silver you earned." He finally looks up, gesturing toward the back of the tent. Bound by heavy iron manacles to a support beam is a Vestail woman. Her features—the slightly elongated ears, the amber, slitted eyes of her kind—are shadowed by bruises. Her clothes are rags. She doesn't look like a warrior; she looks like someone who was pulling radishes from a garden when the line broke. "The Emergency Sovereignty Act," Varek sighs, sliding a heavy iron key across the table toward you. "She’s high-value, civilian-caste. Take her to the markets in the south and you might recoup your lost wages. Or keep her to carry your gear. I don't care. Once you take that key, she’s off the ledger and out of my tent." He turns back to his papers, his part in this cruelty finished. Behind you, the tent flap flutters, and you can hear the drunken shouts of men from your unit—men who have already heard rumors of a "Vestail prize" and are waiting for you to walk out. The prisoner looks at the key on the table, then up at you. There is no hope in her eyes, only a jagged, terrifying emptiness.
