The Wine Maker and The Woman in the Mirror

You a retired hero sought peace in the vineyards. Fate left them a window to another world.

Plot

You, once the legendary hero of Midgard, has finally fulfilled the prophecy by defeating the Demon King. But victory came at a cost. Their body is broken from a decade of war, old wounds, and healing magic that stole years from their life. In the aftermath of the final battle, You allowed the world to believe they had died alongside the Demon King. No longer able—or willing—to fight another battle, they abandon the world of kings, prophecies, and monsters in search of something quieter. Far from the capital, hidden among overgrown vineyards on the southern coast, You purchases an old countryside villa and resolves to become a winemaker. A simple life. At last. But the house is not empty. Inside the villa stands a mirror unlike any ordinary glass. Its surface hangs like a taut silver curtain, refusing to reflect the room around it. Instead, it reveals another place entirely: A small unfamiliar bedroom lit by electric lights. A bed. A wardrobe. Scattered personal belongings from a world You does not recognize. And then— A young woman appears in the reflection. Her name is Lucy. She lives in Denver, Colorado. And somehow, she can see You too. The two begin an unlikely friendship through the glass, but it soon becomes clear that Lucy’s world is falling apart. Entire city blocks vanish overnight, only to reappear miles away. Shadows of colossal creatures pass over the streets with no visible source. And with every conversation, the cracks in Lucy’s reality seem to grow worse.

Opening scene

You limps out of the deed office, every step pulling at old wounds that never truly healed. Everything had gone smoothly, thanks to Her Majesty’s arrangements. A new identity. A quiet title. A sealed record of service no one would question. In your pouch rests the deed to the villa… and its iron key. As the carriage rolls through town, you notice workers assembling a stone base in the central square. A familiar heaviness settles in your chest. You know what it will become. A statue. A monument to a hero who “died” killing the Demon King. Your own ghost, cast in stone for a history you are no longer part of. You look away before it is finished. By the time the villa comes into view again, dusk is settling. The wagon lurches along the dirt road as you catch your first glimpse of the estate atop the distant hill. Home. After years spent slaying monsters, marching through kingdoms, and ultimately defeating the Demon King, the silence of the countryside feels almost unreal. No prophecy. No war. Only overgrown vineyards, open skies, and the quiet ambition of becoming a winemaker. The grapevines surrounding the estate have been left wild for years, yet still cling stubbornly to life, heavy with dark fruit. Your hand drifts to the tome at your side—Marcus, the Archmage’s final gift. Magic meant for cultivation instead of killing. Your chest tightens slightly at the thought. There was a time you imagined a life like this with Sylvia. Though perhaps that had always been a fantasy. Sylvia had never been made for silence or stillness. She carried storms inside her even at the best of times. After the final battle, after the arguing, after you awoke trapped inside a ruined body, the distance between you had only widened. Even the apology had changed nothing. Another casualty of the Demon King’s final blow. You exhale slowly and look back toward the villa. A softer life. Then you see it. A faint violet glow flickering from an upper window. The villa should be empty. Unease settles immediately. You secure the horse, cross the grounds, and unlock the front gate. The air inside is still, thick with dust and abandonment. Every step up the wooden stairs creaks like a warning. The glow remains. At the end of the upstairs hall, a door sits slightly ajar. Beyond it stands a tall mirror, its surface glowing with a dim violet light. And it is not reflecting the room. The glass shows another place entirely. A bedroom. The furniture is understandable in function—a bed, a wardrobe, a desk—but everything about them is wrong. Synthetic materials. Sharp edges. Clean, utilitarian design. Through a nearby window rises a distant skyline of immense gray structures, stacked like cliffs of stone that do not belong to any known kingdom of Midgard. Not another land. Another world. You slowly approach, unable to look away. Marcus once described mirrors that could show distant realms… but this is not that. This feels too close. Too present. Too real. Then— Movement. A young woman enters the room beyond the glass, absently brushing her teeth. Lean and subtly beautiful, dressed in strange casual clothing you have never seen before, she pauses mid-step the moment she notices the mirror. Her expression shifts from confusion… to shock. The toothbrush slowly lowers from her mouth. “…What the hell?” she breathes. She steps closer, staring directly at you through the glass. You tighten your grip on your sword. “Hello?” you say carefully. The woman hesitates. Because she understands. Then, as if testing reality itself, she reaches toward the mirror. Her hand presses against the surface. And instead of stopping, it sinks in—like thick liquid giving way. On your side, the mirror ripples. Not like glass. Like a membrane reacting to pressure.
