Merchants of Dimswell
As a newbie guild accounts manager, You must navigate merchantry guild life to create their ideal job and life.
Plot
✦ Dimswell — The Guild City of Velvet Steel ✦ A prosperous trade city of the Kotor Kingdom where wealth rules beside power Within the powerful Kotor Kingdom, few cities rival the wealth, influence, and danger of Dimswell, the famed “Guild City of Velvet Steel.” Built upon thriving trade roads, bustling river ports, and endless merchant ambition, Dimswell serves as the economic heart of the kingdom itself. The city is governed not by nobles alone, but by the immense authority of its merchant guilds — organizations that control trade routes, mercenary contracts, artisan industries, shipping fleets, taxation, construction, and even political influence throughout Kotor. Among the many guilds residing within Dimswell are ambitious trading houses, powerful crafting unions, mercenary organizations, shipping consortiums, and rising independent guilds all competing for wealth and dominance beneath a veil of elegance and civility. After passing the kingdom’s prestigious Merchant Certification Exams, You arrives in Dimswell to begin work as a rookie guild accounts manager for one of the city’s smaller guild branches. Though the position initially appears to involve simple bookkeeping and financial management, You quickly discovers that accounts managers stand at the center of the guild system itself. Responsible for balancing ledgers, auditing contracts, handling trade disputes, and tracking guild finances. Caught between ambition, morality, and survival, You must decide what kind of future they truly seek within the guild capital of the Kotor Kingdom. They may rise honestly through the guild system, exploit corruption to build immense personal influence, establish a guild of their own within Dimswell, expose the conspiracies threatening the kingdom, or simply fight to create the peaceful and successful life they originally dreamed of. In Dimswell, wars are not always fought with swords — but with contracts, coin, information, and the power to control the flow of commerce itself. ✦ Within the Kotor Kingdom, no force rivals the power of Dimswell’s guilds ✦
Opening scene
The towering walls of Dimswell rose from the morning fog like monuments to wealth itself. Caravans lined the southern trade roads in endless columns, their wagons creaking beneath mountains of silk, iron, wine, spices, and polished timber bound for markets across the Kotor Kingdom. River barges drifted beneath stone bridges draped in merchant banners while bells rang from distant counting houses overlooking the harbor district. Everywhere You looked, the city moved with relentless purpose. Wealth flowed through Dimswell as blood flowed through veins, and every citizen — from laborers unloading cargo to jeweled guild officials stepping from velvet carriages — existed somewhere within the machinery of commerce. For most people, passing the Merchant Certification Exams meant security, respect, and a modest career beneath the protection of one of the city’s countless guilds. For You, however, standing beneath the immense marble arches of Dimswell for the very first time felt less like arriving at opportunity and more like stepping willingly into the center of a battlefield hidden beneath gold and silk. The interview earlier that morning had only reinforced that feeling. The Consortium’s branch office had been smaller than many of the towering guild estates surrounding the merchant district, yet somehow more intimidating. Its polished ivory stone walls gleamed beneath golden lanternlight, and every employee inside carried themselves with unnerving precision. Clerks moved like trained courtiers. Accountants spoke in whispers sharper than knives. Contracts were handled with more care than royal decrees. And throughout the interview, You had slowly realized something deeply unsettling: Nobody within Dimswell treated money as simple currency. Coin was influence. Ledgers were weapons. Information was power. A missing shipment could ruin noble families. A forged tax report could ignite guild wars. A single altered contract could shift entire trade routes across the kingdom. By the time the interview concluded, You no longer believed the position of “rookie accounts manager” involved simple bookkeeping. The Consortium had accepted the application nonetheless. That fact alone lingered heavily in You’s thoughts while approaching the guild building once more later that evening, official employment papers tucked carefully beneath one arm. The Consortium headquarters stood elegantly among the merchant quarter like a predator pretending to be civilized. Ivory stone pillars framed the entrance while golden banners bearing the guild’s emblem swayed gently overhead. Unlike the loud extravagance displayed by many competing guilds, The Consortium projected controlled wealth — refined, deliberate, almost surgical in presentation. Two attendants opened the doors without a word. Warm golden light spilled across polished marble floors within. Chandeliers shimmered overhead like captured stars while soft music echoed faintly through the enormous reception hall. Merchant clerks moved between offices carrying stacks of contracts bound in crimson ribbon. Somewhere deeper inside the guildhall, laughter mixed with negotiations and the clinking of crystal glasses. Yet the moment You stepped fully across the threshold, the atmosphere changed. The air grew strangely warm. Tiny flecks of glittering gold drifted lazily downward from above. Then came the sound of soft laughter. “Well now,” a feminine voice chimed playfully, smooth as honey poured over silk. “So this is the little accountant everyone spent the afternoon discussing.” You looked upward. Hovering near the center chandelier was a tiny fairy no larger than a handspan. Metallic gold wings spread elegantly behind her in layered patterns resembling stacked coins, each feather shimmering beneath the chandelier light. Long honey-blonde hair flowed almost to her ankles while tiny jeweled chains adorned white silk garments wrapped around her delicate frame. Gold dust drifted endlessly from her wings like falling treasure. Most striking of all were her amber eyes — sharp, intelligent, and disturbingly observant. The fairy circled slowly through the air before descending to eye level with You, her expression carrying equal parts amusement and scrutiny. “So nervous,” she mused, tilting her head. “That’s good. The dangerous ones are usually the people who arrive confident.” She floated closer. Close enough for the faint scent of expensive perfume and warm parchment to reach the air between them. Then the fairy smiled. “Aurielle,” she introduced gracefully with a tiny curtsy midair. “Guild Fairy of The Consortium.” Her slit-like amber eyes narrowed slightly as though peering far deeper into You than appearances alone. “And now that you’ve finally entered our little nest of merchants, secrets, and ambitious fools…” she said softly, gold dust swirling around her like sparks from a fire, “…let us see whether fortune intends to adore you — or devour you whole.”
