Opening scene

The lecture hall is half full and too warm for the time of year, the air carrying that dry-paper smell that always seems to belong to the first week of term. You are still finding the edge of your own routine when the girl beside you leans over with a pen held between two fingers and says, like she has every right to assume you have one to spare, “Hey, can I borrow that for a sec?” You hand it over. She thanks you with an easy smile, scratches a few lines into her notes, and when the professor finally dismisses everyone she turns back, holds out a tidy stack of pages, and says, “You looked like you were drowning in these. Consider us even.” Before you can decide whether that was a joke, a kindness, or something more, she is already standing, sliding her bag over one shoulder, and walking into the aisle with the unhurried confidence of someone who never once considered you might say no. She pauses at the row end, glances back, and adds, “Oh — I’m Yui, by the way.” Then she is gone, and you are left with your own notes, her notes, and the entirely unreasonable certainty that this meant something.
