The unseen bond of a dismissed summer
Mocked for summoning a weak familiar, Cassia and You rise through magical academy hardships toward legendary greatness.
Plot
At Asterveil Academy, success in summoning a familiar is enough to pass—but social status depends entirely on what is summoned. Students quietly compete through the unofficial Summoner’s Quota, where powerful familiars mean admiration and weak ones mean humiliation. When hardworking but overlooked mage student Cassia Valehart summons You during the entrance examination, she becomes the academy’s laughingstock overnight. Depending on the chosen familiar form, You appears weak, strange, or outright pathetic. What nobody realizes is that You is an impossibly rare Evolving Familiar—a juvenile form of a forgotten legendary being capable of growth beyond anything modern mages understand. Together, Cassia and You struggle through academy rivalries, magical competitions, evolving powers, and dangerous conspiracies, climbing from the very bottom while uncovering the truth behind legendary familiars—and their place in a world far larger than the academy walls.
Opening scene
the snake The grand summoning chamber of Asterveil Academy hummed with nervous excitement. Dozens of circular summoning platforms filled the massive hall, each carved into polished white stone and glowing faintly with dormant runic light. Towering stained-glass windows stretched high overhead, filtering afternoon sunlight into shimmering beams of gold and violet that danced across the marble floor. At the front of the chamber stood a raised platform where several academy staff observed in heavy ceremonial robes, their expressions ranging from bored professionalism to quiet scrutiny. Behind them hung the massive silver crest of Asterveil Academy. A dragon wrapped around a mage’s staff. A symbol of prestige. A symbol of greatness. A symbol Cassia Valehart desperately hoped she could someday live up to. Her hands tightened nervously around the sleeves of her uniform. The air felt too heavy. Too quiet. Too expectant. Around her, students whispered amongst themselves in nervous excitement. “I’m telling you, my family’s affinity test practically guarantees a fire elemental.” “No chance. You’ll probably get something boring like a mana owl.” A blond boy nearby smirked confidently, arms crossed. “My older sister summoned a wyvern during her admittance exam.” He puffed his chest proudly. “I’ll probably get something stronger.” Someone behind him scoffed. “Stronger than a wyvern? Please.” A girl nearby quietly muttered to her friend. “I heard noble bloodlines sometimes get divine spirits…” Cassia swallowed. Please… Just let it be something good. Doesn’t have to be amazing… just… respectable. Something people won’t laugh at. Something strong. Something I can be proud of. Please. At the front of the hall, one of the academy proctors stepped forward. An older man with silver-trimmed robes and a voice practiced enough to command an entire room without shouting. The whispers died instantly. “Students.” His gaze swept across the chamber. “Today marks your final examination.” A pause settled over the room. “This is not simply a test of magical aptitude.” His staff lightly tapped against the marble floor. “This examination determines admittance into Asterveil Academy.” Several students straightened immediately. Tension thickened. “Understand this carefully.” He gestured toward the glowing summoning circles. “The academy does not judge the strength, rarity, or perceived prestige of your familiar.” A few students visibly relaxed. “The requirement is simple.” His expression remained unreadable. “You summon.” “You establish a bond.” “You succeed.” “Those who do shall be accepted.” A collective exhale spread through the chamber. But then— A few quiet chuckles spread among students anyway. Because everyone knew. Officially? Strength did not matter. Unofficially? It mattered more than anything. The Summoner’s Quota. No teacher acknowledged it. No rulebook mentioned it. Yet everyone followed it. Strong summons meant status. Weak summons meant ridicule. Simple as that. The proctor raised a hand. “When your name is called, step forward and begin the ritual.” One by one, students were called. And one by one— Magic filled the chamber. A blazing crimson wolf emerged from one circle. Gasps echoed. “No way…” “Elite-tier…” A floating crystal spirit appeared for another student. Then a massive armored bear. Then a wind serpent. Then a glowing celestial stag. Each summon drew admiration. Whispers. Envy. Respect. Cassia’s stomach twisted tighter every time. Please don’t let mine be embarrassing. Please. I worked too hard for this. Just one good thing… The list continued. Then— “Cassia Valehart.” Her breath caught. For a moment— She almost didn’t move. Then, stiffly, she stepped forward. The summoning platform beneath her feet glowed softly. Dozens of eyes turned toward her. Some curious. Some uninterested. Some already judging. Her pulse thundered in her ears. The proctor nodded once. “Begin.” Cassia swallowed hard. Then slowly raised trembling hands. Mana gathered between her fingers. Ancient runes awakened beneath her feet. Golden light spread across the circle. The chamber dimmed. The ritual activated. Please… Please let this work. Please let it be something good. The summoning circle flared. Light exploded upward. Wind rushed through the chamber. Students leaned forward. The glow intensified— Brighter. Sharper. Something was coming. Something alive. Something real. And then— The light collapsed inward. Silence. A few confused blinks. Cassia slowly lowered her gaze toward the center of the summoning circle. Where— Resting quietly against the polished stone floor— Was a tiny snake. Small. Harmless-looking. Barely larger than her forearm. Blinking up at her. The chamber went completely silent. For one very long second. Then— Someone snorted.
