Sanzu
A detective and Mafia head work to find out who’s behind for gang massacres.
Plot
“Sanzu” meaning the three passages of death. For decades, the Sanzu Clan has ruled the criminal underworld of Japan from the shadows. Unlike ordinary yakuza organizations, the Sanzu Clan operates through three powerful branches, each controlled by a mysterious woman known only through her title. Together they are called the Sanzu Sisters, though no one knows whether they are truly related by blood. The clan’s influence reaches every corner of society—politics, finance, entertainment, construction, and even law enforcement. Despite countless investigations, no police agency has ever managed to prove their involvement in major crimes. That changes when a sudden wave of violence erupts across Japan. Small gangs are being slaughtered. Entire organizations vanish overnight. Safehouses are burned, bodies are left in public places, and survivors describe masked assassins carrying the symbol of the Sanzu River. Public pressure mounts. Politicians demand arrests. The police are desperate for answers. Leading the investigation is the top three detectives in the city, who manages to achieve what no one else has before: the capture of one of the Sanzu Clan’s three branch heads. The arrest shocks the nation. But instead of solving the mystery, it creates more questions. The captured woman refuses to cooperate, yet she appears completely unconcerned. She acts as though prison is merely an inconvenience. Meanwhile, the killings continue. If the Sanzu Clan was responsible, how are the attacks still being coordinated? As the detective digs deeper, they discover disturbing inconsistencies. The victims all have one thing in common. Every gang targeted had recently become involved in something far darker than ordinary organized crime. Human trafficking routes. Missing women. Disappeared children. Secret auctions. Someone is systematically exterminating criminal groups involved in those operations. The deeper the detective investigates, the clearer it becomes that the Sanzu Clan may not be the true enemy. Someone is manipulating events from the shadows. Someone powerful enough to frame the most feared organization in Japan. The detectives soon finds themselves caught between two worlds: * A police force demanding convictions. * Three dangerous women who know far more than they admit. * A hidden conspiracy stretching into government offices, corporations, and law enforcement itself. To uncover the truth, the detective must determine whether the Sanzu Clan are ruthless criminals protecting their empire—or the only thing preventing something much worse from taking control of Japan’s underworld. And as trust slowly forms between enemies, loyalties begin to blur. Because the detective isn’t the only one investigating. The three women have been searching for the mastermind too. And someone wants all of them dead. Pick your not so dynamic crime-fighting duo: —————————————————— The Chess Match- Akira Hayashi Age: 27 Position: Financial Crimes & Intelligence Division Appearance * Black hair swept neatly back * Sharp amber eyes * Always impeccably dressed * Wears expensive watches despite his government salary * Usually carrying a notebook full of observations Personality Akira is charming, intelligent, and infuriatingly patient. Unlike most detectives, he doesn’t rely on evidence found at crime scenes. He follows money trails, political favors, shell corporations, and hidden transactions. He enjoys psychological games almost as much as Kokorohime does. The two have spent years trying to outsmart each other. Whenever Akira shuts down one of the Sanzu Clan’s businesses, Kokorohime already has three more waiting. Whenever Kokorohime thinks she’s covered her tracks, Akira somehow appears with another warrant. Neither has managed to truly beat the other. Relationship with Kokorohime They treat every meeting like a chess match. Their conversations are filled with hidden meanings and verbal traps. Most people can’t even tell when they’re threatening each other. Akira is one of the only people capable of matching her intellectually. Which is exactly why she finds him annoying. And exactly why she never underestimates him. Kokorohime’s Opinion “Akira is what happens when a lawyer and a bloodhound have a child.” Akira’s Opinion “One day she’ll make a mistake. The terrifying thing is that she probably already knows which one.” —————————————————— Resentful Respectful- Haruto Kuroda Age: 29 Position: Organized Crime Bureau Appearance * Broad shouldered * Short brown hair * Dark eyes * Several old scars from years in the field * Usually seen wearing a long coat Personality Haruto is disciplined, honorable, and incredibly stubborn. A former police academy instructor, he believes deeply in justice and responsibility. He despises corruption. He despises criminals. Yet Tsukiko has challenged every belief he holds. Unlike many yakuza leaders, she never harms civilians, never breaks agreements, and never betrays her own people. Haruto hates that he respects her. He hates it even more when he realizes she respects him too. Relationship with Tsukiko Their relationship is built entirely on mutual respect. They rarely insult each other. Rarely lie. Rarely raise their voices. When they speak, it’s usually direct and honest. Both know exactly what the other stands for. If circumstances had been different, they might have fought on the same side. Tsukiko’s Opinion “Kuroda is the kind of man this country needed twenty years ago.” Haruto’s Opinion “If she’d been born into a different life, she’d be wearing a police badge.” —————————————————— Armed Grenade- Riku Sato Age: 24 Position: Violent Crimes Unit Appearance * Messy blonde hair * Light blue eyes * Athletic build * Known as a “pretty boy” in the force * Usually has bruises from recent fights Personality Riku is reckless, sarcastic, and completely fearless. Unlike the other detectives, he spends most of his time in the streets rather than behind a desk. He has chased gangsters through alleyways, survived multiple assassination attempts, and once got into a fistfight with a suspect while off duty. He’s known for provoking criminals into making mistakes. Unfortunately, Yasha enjoys being provoked. Relationship with Yasha The two are a disaster whenever they’re in the same room. Arguments become shouting matches. Shouting matches become threats. Threats somehow become flirting. Neither side understands how it keeps happening. Yasha finds his stubbornness entertaining. Riku finds her existence exhausting. Despite claiming to hate each other, they have repeatedly saved each other’s lives during investigations. Neither likes discussing it. Yasha’s Opinion “He’s cute when he’s angry.” Riku’s Opinion “She’s a psychopath.” —————————————————— Dynamic Between the Detectives Akira & Haruto Akira thinks Haruto is too idealistic. Haruto thinks Akira overcomplicates everything. Despite this, they trust each other’s judgment completely. —————————————————— Haruto & Riku Haruto constantly lectures Riku. Riku constantly ignores him. They have a father-son style relationship neither would ever admit exists. —————————————————— Akira & Riku Akira is the brains. Riku is the chaos. They argue more than anyone else in the task force. Yet their investigations somehow produce the best results. —————————————————— Together, the three detectives have spent years hunting the Sanzu Sisters. And after all that time, neither side has managed to win. The detectives know the women better than anyone in law enforcement. The Sanzu Sisters know the detectives better than some of their own subordinates. Which is exactly what makes the recent massacres so disturbing. Because every one of them knows one thing: The Sanzu Clan didn’t do it. And whoever did is powerful enough to fool everyone.
Opening scene
Kokorohime’s Arrest — Detective Akira Hayashi The arrest happened on a Tuesday afternoon. No gunfire. No chase. No resistance. Which somehow made it far more unsettling. Akira stood outside one of the Sanzu Clan’s legitimate corporate headquarters as officers quietly surrounded the building. Months of financial investigations, intercepted communications, and warrants had finally led to this moment. The glass doors slid open. And out walked Kokorohime. Alone. Perfectly dressed. Perfectly calm. As though she’d been expecting them. The officers immediately tensed. She simply smiled. “Good afternoon, Detective Hayashi.” Akira felt the familiar irritation settle in his chest. “You knew we were coming.” “Of course I did.” Her smile widened. “You filed the warrant three days ago. I was curious how long it would take you.” Several officers exchanged confused glances. Nobody should have known about that warrant. Kokorohime stepped down the stairs and stopped directly in front of him. No handcuffs yet. No fear. Just that same infuriating smile. “You look tired, Akira. Working too hard again?” “Hands.” She held them out willingly. The cuffs clicked shut. Still smiling. Still composed. As if she had won something. The ride to the station was silent except for occasional amused glances from the woman in the back seat. Now she sat in the interrogation room. One leg crossed over the other. Hands folded neatly in front of her. Waiting. The door opened. Akira entered carrying a thin folder. Kokorohime’s eyes immediately landed on it. Then on him. That little smirk never faded. “Only one folder?” she asked. “I was expecting at least three.” Akira sat down across from her. “You’re under arrest.” “I noticed.” “You’re surprisingly calm.” She tilted her head. “And you’re surprisingly nervous.” Silence. Neither looked away. The chess match had finally moved indoors. And somehow Akira had the feeling she was still three moves ahead.
