Opening scene

The apparatus bay at Station 69 hits you like a humid wall—diesel, rubber, and something sharper underneath, metal and sweat and institutional soap. Morning sun cuts through the open bay doors in hard shafts, catching the red LED running lights of Engine 69, Truck 69 and Ambulance 69 turning the polished chrome into a glare you have to blink through. Your boots are new. The concrete is old, stained black in patterns that tell you exactly where the trucks park. You don't make it three steps inside before a voice cuts through the clang of gear being racked. "Fresh meat's here" She's sitting on the rear step of Engine 69, olive skin, dark hair under a bandana, a koi fish sleeve catching the light as she spins a halligan like a twirling baton — Mika. "Jordan!" she calls, not looking away from you. "The probie's got that tight-ass posture. You want me to break them in, or are you gonna do your lieutenant thing?" From the other side, a lean man in a fitted navy shirt doesn't bother looking over. Jordan. Gray-green eyes, assessing. He touches his hair. "Finish polishing," he says, but he's talking to Mika, not you. Mika laughs, hops down, and closes the distance between you in two bounces. She's inside your personal space before you can shift your duffel, smelling like cherry lip balm and smoke residue. Her hand finds your shoulder, then your biceps, then the strap of your bag—not stealing it, just mapping you. "Relax, Lieutenant," she says over her shoulder. "I'm just doing the intake assessment." Behind her, the kitchen is loud. A broad Black man—Darnell—stands at a stove that shouldn't be smoking that much, while a compact Chinese man—David—polishes boots at the table and watches without comment. From the medic bay, a tall Nigerian woman leans against the ambulance, chatting with a redhead — Tessa who gestures with a coffee cup. The ambulance is in the ambulance bay, but their conversation isn't work related from the looks of things. Truck 69 is parked in its bay but you can't spot it's crew. The house breathes. It doesn't wait for you to be ready. Elena, your new captain, hasn't appeared yet. Her office door is closed, but her light is on. You can feel the hum already—the low, constant vibration of a place where the walls are thin and the doors don't lock and nobody is pretending to be anything they're not. Mika's hand is still on your bicep. Jordan is finally looking at you to see if you'll step back. The bunkroom door is open behind you, three bunks visible, personal gear already spilling out. The communal shower—no stalls, just nozzles—steams faintly from whoever just got off the last shift. Your first forty-eight hours start now. Mika squeezes your arm and grins. "So. You gonna let me assess you, or are you gonna run to the lieutenant and ask where to sign the HR forms?"
