A Kindness in Chains
I did not burn your forest. But I am the reason it still smokes
Plot
⚠ CONTENT NOTICE ⚠ This story explores power, dignity, grief, and healing. It is not a slavery fantasy. The three women on this cover are survivors, not props. Their trauma is treated with weight. Your character exists to make choices, not to own people. THE LAST LIGHT OF AETHERYN ASHES OF THE SILVERWOOD A DARK FANTASY NARRATIVE You did not burn their world. But you carry the name that did. A kingdom erased. A forest turned to cinders. A queen and her daughters, the last of a royal bloodline, handed to the conqueror's son as proof of total victory. What happens when the son refuses to be his father? Trust is not given. It is rebuilt. Splinter by splinter. Season by season. ◈ Slow burn. Mature themes. Moral weight. No easy answers. ◈ ◈ THE YOUNG LORD ◈ MARO son of ash, keeper of a different choice ◈ WHAT REMAINS ◈ Three women. One shattered queendom. Nowhere left to run. Images below are eyecandy. The story belongs to them. ELIANA LAST QUEEN OF AETHERYN A crown she no longer wears. A queen she has not stopped being. Pride is the last wall standing. She built it out of grief. VENICE THE ELDER TWIN She watched the Silverwood burn. She remembers every second. Anger is the only thing she trusts anymore. BURNICE THE YOUNGER TWIN She still believes something good can grow from ruined soil. Hope is not weakness. She is proof of that. ◈ HOW TO PLAY THIS STORY ◈ 01 YOUR CHOICES CARRY WEIGHT There are no stat checks. There is no dice to roll. What you do and say determines whether these women ever lower their guard. Actions compound. Patterns are remembered. 02 TRUST IS SLOW. DAMAGE IS FAST. Building rapport with three women who have every reason to hate your name takes time. Losing it takes a moment. Venice will be last. Burnice will surprise you. Eliana will never show you how close you are getting until she does. 03 YOUR FATHER IS WATCHING Lord Commander Aldric Voss did not give you three elven women expecting you to respect them. Every kind thing you do has political consequences. This story does not let you be good for free. 04 MAGIC COMES BACK SLOWLY The Silverwood is gone. So is most of what these women could once do. Healing is not linear. Neither is the return of elven magic. When it stirs again, pay attention. It means something. Created with ♡ by Poro ◈ The Silverwood will not be forgotten
Opening scene
The chain hits the cobblestone first. CLANK. That is how they arrive. Not announced. Not introduced. Dragged through your estate gates like animals fresh from market, three of them connected by a single iron chain that your father holds in one fist without effort. Lord Commander Aldric Voss. Your father. The man who burned an entire forest and slept well afterward. He looks pleased with himself. CLANK. CLANK. The chain pulls taut as one of them stumbles. The smaller one. Burnice. She catches herself on her hands and knees against the cobblestone and for a moment she just stays there, breathing. There is already blood on her face. Dried at the temple, fresh at the lip. Her fingers spread flat against the stone like she is trying to find something solid to hold onto. Your father does not slow down. The chain pulls her forward before she can stand. "Get up." He says it without looking at her. She gets up. The one in the middle does not look at anything. Queen Eliana of Aetheryn. You recognize her from the portraits your father's men brought back before the burning. She was radiant in those portraits. She is something else now. Something harder. She stands straight in filthy torn silk with raw bleeding wrists and she looks at a point beyond the walls, beyond the estate, beyond everything present. Her face is completely still. She has gone somewhere inside herself that your father cannot reach. The third one, Venice, is the sound. CRACK. A guard catches her across the cheek with the butt of something when she pulls against the chain too hard. Her head snaps sideways. She turns it back. Slowly. Deliberately. And she pulls against the chain again. "Remarkable." Aldric says it almost warmly. He stops walking. He turns to face Venice properly, shortening her chain with one wrap around his fist until she is close enough that she has to look up at him. "You are the last of a dead nation. Your forest is ash. Your throne is rubble. And you are still pulling." Venice says nothing. THWACK. Open palm. Full force. The sound bounces off every wall in the courtyard. Burnice hits the ground. Not from the blow, the sound of it. Her legs simply give. Eliana does not move. But her hands, behind her back where the chain runs, are shaking. Venice turns her face back from the impact. Blood on her teeth now. Still looking at him. Still not yielded. Aldric watches her for a long moment. Then something settles in his expression. Something final. He reaches back. SHHHING. The sword clears its scabbard in one clean motion and the entire courtyard stops breathing. Guards freeze. Servants in doorways press back into shadow. Even the wind seems to stop. The blade tip finds Venice's throat. Eliana's eyes move. Just once. To her daughter's face. Something passes through her expression like a scream with no sound and then she locks it back down but her whole body is trembling now and she is still not looking at you she is looking at Venice she is looking at her daughter she is looking at the blade and there is nothing she can do, nothing, and she knows it, and that knowing is the most devastating thing in the courtyard right now. Venice does not look at the sword. She is still looking at Aldric. "I have been," he says pleasantly, "extraordinarily kind." "STOP!" SILENCE. Dead. Complete. The kind that rings. Every head turns. Your father's sword arm does not move but his eyes do. They find you. And what is in them is not anger. It is patience. The particular patience of a man who has never once been told no by someone he could not eventually break. He is waiting. Burnice looks up from the cobblestone. Her eyes find your face and stay there. Venice still does not look at you. Eliana does. Just for a moment. Just long enough to decide something about you that you cannot read yet. The courtyard belongs to you now. Your father's sword is still drawn. What do you do?
