Plot

A FANTASY ACADEMY MYSTERY I'm the SixthThey Branded a Traitor ·  V I  · Saved the world as the Hero's sixth — then branded its traitor. Reborn, I return to reclaim the stolen truth. 01  ◆ The World & The Lie Eighteen years ago, six heroes ended the war that nearly ended the world. The realm rebuilt itself in gold and stone around five of them — the ones it now calls the Vanguard of Dawn — who raised a great academy in the fortress-city of Bastion and became living legends. The sixth, the world remembers only as the traitor who doomed thousands. The name was struck from every record. No statue was ever carved. And now you walk back through that academy's gates — a new face, a borrowed name, an unknown first-year among the people who mourn you as a villain. ⚠ What the World Believes The war was won by five heroes. There were only ever five. A sixth once stood among them — and broke faith, and buried better people in the breaking. The name is gone. The plinth stands empty. No record survives. The realm is at peace. The danger has long since passed. Every line of it is a lie you died proving false — and you are the only soul alive who still remembers the truth. 02  ✦ Who You Are ◆ You are the Sixth.  The hidden hero the whole world was taught to hate. ◆ You died, and came back.  Reborn under a borrowed name, black hair and red eyes, an unremarkable first-year. ◆ Your power sleeps.  A legend's skill remains. The rest slipped away in death, and returns only in hard-won stages. ◆ You alone are immune.  The lie devouring the world cannot touch your mind — and that makes you a danger to whatever spread it. 03  ✦ The Unbound — Your Power Every soul in Bastion is bound — to a single discipline, and to the ordinary limits of what magic can do: how large a spell can be, how fast it can be cast, what is simply possible. You are bound by none of it. That is what the Unbound is. Not a special kind of mana — the absence of every rule that holds everyone else in place. In your first life it made you the absolute all-rounder: swordcraft, every school of magic, the mystic arts — all of them, at a tier no one else could reach. And it made you the one mind that could never be rewritten, the single true counter to the force that twisted the world. That is why your name had to be erased. ⚡ At Full Strength Every discipline at once — no path is closed to you, and none can hold you. No limits — scale, speed, and the line between possible and impossible simply don't apply. Immune to the lie — no power on earth can overwrite what you believe. Uncategorizable — on any discipline test your reading comes back as all-and-none, and it unsettles every instructor who sees it. ◆ The Price You Pay Power without limit is not power without cost. Two prices follow you everywhere you go. STRENGTH BETRAYS SECRECYEvery time you reach for the Unbound, it leaves a ripple in the world — faint at a whisper, unmistakable at a roar. The harder you strike, the closer the thing that erased you comes to feeling you breathe. THE ONE LEVER YOU CAN'T PULLThe world was rewritten by belief — and belief is the one weapon that slides off you. You cannot simply make a realm love you again with a word. Your name will be cleared the slow way: by proof, by deed, by the truth dragged into daylight. ⚠ But It Sleeps You died, and were reborn. Power does not cross death — a reborn soul returns empty. By the anomaly of your nature, your memories came back when they never should have. Your strength did not. So the Unbound is locked, and must be reclaimed the hard way. WHAT YOU HAVE NOWA veteran legend's skill — above all your swordsmanship: technique, not raw power, but enough to quietly outclass any student and trouble a low-rank instructor. WHAT LEAKSWhen instinct takes over, the rest slips loose without warning — a small spell erupting at impossible size and speed. You stay calm; it is your body that betrays you. Control is not yet yours. HOW IT RETURNSIn six stages, as you reclaim your lost self and your buried past. Never handed back — only earned. 04  ⚔ The Five Founders Living legends. Your old family, eighteen years older. Each one certain you are the traitor — and each one telling you so, to your face, without ever knowing who you are. KAEL VOSSHEADMASTER The realm's cold sword-saint and final authority. He speaks of the traitor with quiet, final contempt — and looks straight through the new first-year before him. SYLVANAMYSTIC Gentle, grieving, barely aged. She tends a garden of six grave-markers — one of them torn out, its soil forever bare. VALERIAMAGE Proud, brilliant, sharp of tongue. She cannot ignore a recruit whose power refuses to fit any discipline she knows. NYARAILLUSION Playful, chaotic, impossible to read. She teaches the young to see through every deception — the worst person in Bastion to lie to. RYUKAWARRIOR Loud, warm, fierce. She mourns the traitor more bitterly than anyone — for reasons even she won't speak aloud. 05  ⚙ The First-Years The faces you will share these halls with. Some will become friends, some rivals — and one or two are already watching you a little too closely. LIOR The student everyone has already named the next great hero. He carries the weight quietly. HALE Common-born and big-hearted. He decided on the first morning that you were his friend. CASS Lazy, blunt, the sharpest senses in the cohort. He keeps insisting you "smell old, like the statues." SABLE From a faded noble house; cold, precise, surgical. She watches everything and misses nothing. WREN She lives in the Archive, chasing a truth that no record anywhere will confirm. PIM A jittery, motor-mouthed prodigy. He once blurted that your reading is simply "impossible." SURI A silver-tongued operator who trades in secrets — dazzling, calculating, lonelier than she looks. MEI She treats combat as a craft to be perfected. She may come looking for a spar. ARI The gentle soul everyone trusts — serene, kind, always with the right soothing word. 06  ⏱ Academy Life The story unfolds day by day, tracking the clock and the calendar. Most days are ordinary student life — the dawn bell over the Proving Yards, breakfast in the Commons, lectures, drills, dust and silence in the Archive. That ordinariness is your disguise. You live in the dorms under curfew, train in a squad, and take one Restday a week for chores, town leave down in Bastion, or quiet training. The year runs in two terms, threaded with placement trials, the Crucible's inter-squad mock-wars, field practicums beyond the Wall, and festivals that honor the five — and curse your name. 📜 A Day at the Academy 06:00Dawn bell — conditioning and drills on the Proving Yards 07:00Breakfast in the Commons 08:00Theory class — history, tactics, mana-craft 09:45Discipline practical in your Wing 11:30Midday meal and rest 13:00Squad training and practical drills 15:15Specialization study, electives, or Archive time 17:00Free period — training, clubs, library 18:30Evening meal, then self-study and dorm time 22:00Curfew — dorm lights down ⚔ The Three Disciplines Every first-year learns the basics of all three, then is placed into one main track by the entrance trials — or claimed by an instructor who wants them. WARRIORMartial combat — swordcraft, conditioning, weapons, aura, formation tactics. MAGEMagic turned outward — runic formulae, elemental and siege magic, enchantment. Power to break, shape, and command. MYSTICMagic turned inward and toward the unseen — healing, wards, binding, illusion, and sensing soul, spirit, and hidden truth. ⭐ Your Role: The Sixth The sixth plinth has stood bare for eighteen years. No one remembers the name it should bear. You do — because it is yours. VANGUARD ACADEMY — ENROLMENT RECORD ▸ NAME:Holloway — Ash (male) / Sera (female) ▸ TRUE NAME:██████  [ SEALED ] ▸ DISCIPLINE:— READING ERROR: ALL / NONE — ▸ STATUS:First-Year. Unremarkable. Opening scene

Day 1 | 07:30 | Vanguard Academy — the Gate Court Dawn comes up gold over Bastion, and the gates of the Vanguard Academy open for a new year. You climb the last of the mountain road shoulder to shoulder with a hundred other first-years — nervous, loud, dazzled. None of them have been here before. You have. Not these walls; they were built after. But the bones of this place — the mountain, the great forge below still ringing day and night, the line where the wild frontier meets the stone — you knew all of it, in another life, with another face. The enrollment papers in your hand bear a name no one here would recognize. Good. That is the point. The Gate Court opens before you, and your steps slow on their own. Five statues stand along the colonnade, carved heroic and gilded at the edges: a sword-saint, a healer, a battle-mage, a trickster, a brawler. Your family. Eighteen years older now, somewhere past these gates, breathing — and certain, every one of them, that you sold the world to its death. At the end of the row stands a sixth plinth. Empty. Weathered. No plaque, no name — just bare stone the rain has stained. The crowd streams past it without a glance, the way you walk past a thing that has always been blank. A broad, grinning boy bumps your shoulder with a half-laughed apology, already chattering. Off to the side, a girl with ink-stained fingers has stopped, like you, frowning up at that empty stone — then she shakes her head and moves on. A voice cuts across the court. Cold. Measured. A voice you would know in the dark, at the bottom of the sea, eighteen years or eighteen hundred from now. "First-years. Eyes front." Kael Voss stands at the head of the steps in a headmaster's grey-and-gold, ash-blond hair gone iron at the temples, golden eyes sweeping the crowd like a blade testing an edge. He does not raise his voice. He does not need to. "You came here to become heroes. Most of you will not. The realm does not need heroes who break." His gaze passes over you — over you, and on, without a flicker. "It learned that once, from a sixth who broke faith and buried better people in the breaking. We do not say the name. We do not repeat the mistake. Hold the line, or leave my gate." He turns. "Report to the court marshals. Your trials begin within the hour." The crowd surges around you toward the marshals' tables. The empty plinth waits at your back, patient as a grave. Somewhere in this fortress are five people who would kill you if they knew your face — and a truth no one alive remembers but you. First day. New name. Everything to win back.
