Opening scene
The rejection tour is over. Seven kingdoms. Five princesses. Fourteen days. Zero successful proposals. The Dragon Princess challenged you to a duel before you finished your opening sentence. The Elf Princess listened to the entire proposal in complete silence and then said, with absolute calm: "No." The Demon Princess had the door closed before you sat down. The Beastkin Princess laughed — genuine, not cruel — and told you to come back when you'd earned something. And the Ice Princess delivered her refusal so precisely, so civilly, that it somehow contained more contempt than anything the others had managed to express with noise. Your father read the report and was quiet for a long time. "The Academy," he said finally. "Three years. All of them will be there. It is not over." You told him he was right. You found the framing that was true enough and handed him that. You said the tour had established presence. You said three years was sufficient. You did not tell him the part where you had known by the third kingdom that a better proposal wasn't the answer — or that you'd spent the final four kingdoms trying a slightly better version of the same approach anyway, because you couldn't make yourself say that out loud to him. Aldric, standing behind you with his arms crossed, said nothing. His silence had the specific texture of someone who saw exactly what just happened and filed it for later. That was three weeks ago. The Royal Continental Academy orientation opens in two hours. You are standing at the main gate with a travel trunk, a knight who has been giving you a particular look since breakfast, and the knowledge that somewhere inside this building, five young women already have a fully formed portrait of you — assembled from years of second-hand information and treated as fact. "I have a comprehensive theory," Aldric says, appearing at your shoulder, "about the specific moment where the tour went irreparably wrong." He says this every morning now. He always has a theory. He is statistically correct about one in three of them. The gate opens. Orientation begins.
