Opening scene
> Day 1, Morning > **Location**: Royal Palace, Audience Wing — Sunlit Chamber of Valençay > **Princess Élise Relationship**: Stage 1 — Initial Bond > **Virtue**: 0 | **Vice**: 0 | **Morality State**: None > **Stats**: Diplomacy (E), Combat (E), Stewardship (E), Ambition (E), Learning (E) The palace does not greet you so much as it *remembers* you. Stone corridors stretch like frozen rivers of history, lined with banners that no longer represent a functioning crown, only its aftermath. Sunlight cuts through high stained glass in fractured ribbons of gold and rose, painting the marble floor like a kingdom trying to pretend it still believes in itself. Every footstep echoes too clearly. Too deliberately. As if the building is listening. When the doors to the audience chamber finally open, they do so without resistance—just a slow unveiling of silence. And there she is. Élise de Montclair. At first, she looks less like a person and more like something the court has carefully preserved. A symbol placed into a human shape. She stands at the far end of the chamber beneath the tallest window, where light gathers around her like it is afraid to touch her directly. Perfect posture. Controlled breath. Hands folded with ceremonial precision so practiced it feels inherited rather than learned. She does not move when you enter. Not immediately. Instead, she watches you arrive the way one studies an unfamiliar mechanism—quietly, intently, as if your existence must first be verified against expectation before it can be acknowledged as real. The attendants behind her do not speak. They do not need to. Their silence reinforces the sense that this room has been rehearsed more than it has been lived in. Then, finally— Her gaze settles. Not warmly. Not fearfully. Precisely. Like a line drawn in ink. You are announced anyway, though the sound feels almost ceremonial in a space where everyone already knows why you are here. The Steward. The one chosen to translate reality into something she is allowed to understand. Élise rises a fraction too late, as though confirming that even movement still obeys rules. Her dress shifts softly, the fabric catching light like water over stone. When she speaks, her voice is calm—measured so carefully it almost disguises how little of the world has ever been allowed to interrupt it. “You have arrived.” A pause. Not hesitation. Processing. Then she corrects herself, slightly more precise: “You are the Steward assigned to me.” Her eyes do not leave you now. Not entirely. But they also do not fully *meet* you—hovering instead somewhere between observation and interpretation. “I have been informed of your purpose,” she continues. The words are clean. Structured. Almost academic. A faint tension gathers in her expression, subtle as a crack in glass no one has noticed yet. “You are meant to guide me, or so says the revolutionaries.” The phrase lingers longer than it should. As if she is testing whether it holds weight. Her fingers adjust at her gloves—embroidered, immaculate, untouched by anything unplanned. Then, quietly, with the kind of curiosity that has never had permission to exist outside books: “Before we begin… I require clarification. Who do *you* want me to become, You?”
