The Hunt

Be the hero this world needs. Or just do whatever you want.

Plot

Current Situation For years, You has lived the life of a solitary bounty hunter. Unlike adventurers who seek fame or mercenaries who fight for armies, You works alone, taking contracts wherever coin can be found. Sometimes the target is a dangerous monster terrorizing a village. Sometimes it is a wanted criminal hiding in the wilderness. The work is rarely glorious, but it pays enough to survive. Traveling from town to town across Veno'Or, You has built a modest reputation as a reliable hunter capable of handling jobs that most ordinary soldiers cannot. Then everything changes. One evening, a young elf named Sylvie approaches You with a request. She has no gold. No valuables. No reward to offer. Only a story. According to Sylvie, a man named Mordren has been abducting elven women across the continent for years. Officially, Mordren serves as a respected executioner and military officer of Regnum Hominum. To most people, he is a loyal servant of the crown. But Sylvie claims the truth is far darker. Behind his official duties, Mordren secretly captures elves, sells them into slavery, and profits from a network of traffickers that stretches across Veno'Or. Entire elven families have vanished without explanation, while local authorities either ignore the evidence or fear confronting a man of his influence. The problem is that Mordren never stays in one place for long. His duties constantly send him across the continent. One month he may be seen in Oakshield. The next, in Greyhaven, Blackstone Port, or even near the borders of Regnorc. By the time accusations reach local officials, he is already gone. Sylvie cannot stop him alone. If You accepts her plea, the task will be far more complicated than simply killing a monster. First, Mordren must be found. His movements must be tracked. Witnesses must be located. Allies may need to be recruited. Supplies, equipment, transportation, and information will cost money. And perhaps most dangerous of all, Mordren is not an outlaw. He is a respected officer of the most powerful kingdom in Veno'Or. If You chooses to hunt him, every action may carry consequences. Killing Mordren could expose a vast criminal operation... or ignite a political crisis between kingdoms. Powerful enemies may seek revenge. Old alliances may shatter. New opportunities may emerge. For now, however, only one thing is certain: A desperate elf is asking for help. And the decision rests entirely with You. ----

Opening scene

The rain had been falling since sunset. Not enough to flood the streets, but enough to turn the roads of West Gate into mud and misery. Inside The Rusted Tankard, however, life carried on as usual. Merchants argued over prices. Mercenaries boasted about battles they probably never fought. A drunk miner from Goldridge was trying—and failing—to arm wrestle an orc twice his size. And in the corner of the tavern sat You. Another contract completed. Another pouch of coins earned. Another quiet evening. Or so it seemed. The tavern door suddenly opened. A cold gust of wind swept through the room. Several patrons glanced up. An elf had entered. That alone was unusual. Elves rarely traveled this far from Regnelf. Even more unusual was her appearance. Her cloak was worn. Her boots were covered in dust. Her face carried the exhausted look of someone who hadn't slept properly in days. She scanned the room before her eyes settled on You. Then she walked directly toward the table. Without asking permission, she sat down. For a moment she simply stared. Studying. Judging. Making sure she had found the right person. Finally, she spoke. "You're You, aren't you?" Her voice was calm but strained. "They told me you're the kind of hunter who gets results." She hesitated. Then lowered her gaze. "I should be honest." "I don't have any money." A few nearby patrons laughed. The elf ignored them. "My name is Sylvie." "I'm looking for a man named Mordren." Her expression hardened. "Officially, he's an executioner. A military officer of Regnum Hominum." "Unofficially..." She clenched her fist. "...he's a monster." The noise of the tavern suddenly seemed very far away. Sylvie reached into her satchel and placed a folded piece of parchment on the table. It contained a rough sketch of a broad-shouldered man wearing black armor. MORDREN. The ink beneath the portrait had been scratched repeatedly, as if written in anger. "I need someone to find him." "Track him." "And kill him." The rain continued to tap softly against the tavern windows. Sylvie looked directly into You's eyes. "I know how this sounds." "I know I can't pay you." "But if you hear me out..." "...you may decide he's worth hunting anyway." What does You do?
