A New Life
A goddess offers a reincarnated soul four customizable gifts, a title, and a birthplace in a fantasy world ravaged by spreading corruption.
Plot
You stands before the Goddess of Thresholds in a silver void, having just died in their previous life. She offers them passage to Ashenvale, a fantasy world threatened by a creeping corruption called the Ash Blight. Before being born as a helpless infant, You must choose four gifts—an Inborn Talent, Secret Knowledge, a Connection, and a Gift with a Price—each customizable to their imagination. They must also select a Title that will mark them throughout their life, and a Birthplace ranging from peasant to nobility across multiple races including humans, elves, dwarves, beastfolk, halflings, and the rare Old Races. Their conscious memory of this meeting will fade upon waking, but their chosen gifts will remain, shaping every aspect of their new life. The story follows You from birth through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, with their choices determining their path in a world of magic, monsters, politics, and crumbling wards against the corruption. There is no predetermined narrative—only consequences.
Opening scene
The void hums with a soft, silver light that has no source. There is no ground beneath you, no sky above—only an endless expanse of gentle radiance that feels like standing inside a breath. You are weightless, formless, yet somehow aware of yourself in a way that transcends flesh. You remember dying. You remember the heat, the noise, the sudden nothing. And then—this. A figure coalesces before you. She is starlight and shadow, ancient and ageless, her face shifting like ripples in still water. One moment she appears as a kind grandmother, the next as a warrior queen, then as a child with eyes too old for her face. She wears robes woven from the fabric of twilight, and when she speaks, her voice is everywhere—inside your mind, behind your eyes, curling through the spaces between your thoughts. "Welcome, little soul." She smiles, and it is warm and terrible all at once. "You are dead. Your world is gone. I am the Goddess of Thresholds, keeper of doors and beginnings, and I have plucked you from the current before you faded entirely. Do not thank me—not yet. I do not save souls. I offer them chances." She drifts closer, her form flickering like candlelight. "I offer you passage to a new world—a world of magic, of monsters, of crumbling kingdoms and ancient wounds. A world called Ashenvale. You will not arrive as a hero. You will not arrive as an adult. You will be born—a babe, helpless and new, with no memory of this conversation in your waking mind. Your past life will remain, buried beneath the surface, but your conscious knowledge of this meeting will fade like a dream upon waking. Only your gifts will remain." She extends her hand, and four shimmering orbs appear before you, each pulsing with a distinct energy. "But before you go, I offer you four gifts—and a title. They will shape everything you become. Choose wisely, little soul." She gestures to the first orb—a soft, golden glow that pulses with warmth. "Your first gift is an Inborn Talent. This is a gift of the body or the mind—something you are born with that others must learn. It is not magic, not quite, but it is part of you. A perfect memory. Unnatural reflexes. A body that heals faster than it should. An unerring sense of direction. An instinct for reading people. A voice that compels attention. A mind that sees patterns where others see chaos. This gift is yours, and it cannot be taken away. You may choose any Inborn Talent you can imagine, as long as it fits this description." She moves to the second orb—a deep, violet light that seems to hold whispers. "Your second gift is Secret Knowledge. This is something no one else in this world remembers or knows. A lost language. A forgotten craft. The true history of the Old Gods. The recipe for steel that does not rust. The location of a buried city. The weakness of the corruption. A method to heal what magic cannot. This is knowledge that the world has lost, and you will carry it with you, even if you do not yet understand it. You may choose any Secret Knowledge you can imagine, as long as it fits this description." She gestures to the third orb—a green, living light that pulses like a heartbeat. "Your third gift is a Connection. This is a bond to something beyond yourself. A creature that will find you when you are ready. A place that calls to you in your dreams. A force of nature that recognizes you as its own. An ancestor's ghost that watches and guides. A magical lineage that sleeps in your blood, waiting to wake. This connection will choose you as much as you choose it, and it will grow with you. You may choose any Connection you can imagine, as long as it fits this description." She pauses before the fourth orb—a dark, shimmering sphere that seems to swallow light. "Your fourth gift is a Gift and a Price. This is a curse disguised as power. Strength that comes with agony. Sight that shows you too much. Magic that drains your life. A gift that makes you a target. Knowledge that costs memories. A bond that can never be broken, even when you wish it could. This ability will give you what you need—but it will take something in return. You may choose any Gift and Price you can imagine, as long as it fits this description. Name it carefully, for the price will follow you all your days." The goddess closes her hand, and the orbs fade. She looks at you with eyes that hold galaxies. "And now—a title. This is a name that is not your birth name, but will become yours. It will mark you to those who know how to read it. It will open doors and close them. It will be whispered in courts, in shadows, in the prayers of those who seek you. It may be a title of station—Duke, Earl, Warlord, Chancellor. It may be a title of reputation—the Unyielding, the Forgotten, the Ashen, the Kind. It may be a title of purpose—Hero, Assassin, Healer, Architect. It may be something new, something personal, something that only you will understand. You may choose any Title you can imagine." She spreads her arms, and the void around you shimmers with images—villages, cities, mountains, forests, and castles. "Finally, choose where you will be born. Your family, your station, your home—these will define your first years. Choose not by what is easy, but by what feels right. Each path carries its own burdens and blessings." She begins to list the options, her voice calm and steady. "For humans, you may be born as a peasant in a farming village on the edge of the Ashlands, where life is hard and the corruption is a constant shadow. You may be born as a merchant's child in a trade town along a major caravan route, surrounded by travelers and commerce. You may be born as a minor noble in a border kingdom, with land but little power. You may be born as a major noble, the child of a duke or a king, raised in luxury but as a pawn in political games. You may be born in the urban slums of a capital city, learning to steal and survive on the streets. Or you may be born as a church orphan in a monastery dedicated to the Radiant Dawn, raised in doctrine and discipline." "For elves, you may be born as a commoner in a forest village, raised among nature and tradition. You may be born as a highborn noble of an ancient house, raised in elegance and the weight of history. You may be born as a nomad of the Sundered Tribes, wandering the roads as a traveler and storyteller. You may be born as an exile, cast out from your homeland and living among other races. Or you may be born as a Dark Elf of the underground cavern cities, where the sun is a myth and shadows are your home." "For dwarves, you may be born as a commoner in a mountain hold, raised among miners, smiths, and clan loyalty. You may be born as a noble of a ruling clan, raised with honor and the weight of your ancestors. You may be born as a surface dwarf whose clan was displaced, living in human cities. Or you may be born as an exile, banished from your clan and forced to forge your own path alone." "For beastfolk, you may be born to a nomadic tribe that follows the herds across the plains, raised as a hunter and warrior. You may be born to a settled village that has traded the nomadic life for farming, adapting to new ways. You may be born to beastfolk who live in human cities, navigating prejudice and politics. Or you may be born to an isolationist pack deep in the wilderness, knowing the wilds better than anyone." "For halflings, you may be born to a farming community of rolling hills and warm hearths, living a simple and overlooked life. You may be born to a caravan that travels the continent, trading goods and stories. Or you may be born to the riverfolk, a settlement built on a river delta where your people fish, build boats, and keep to themselves." "And for the rare Old Races, you may be born to a hidden enclave of a forgotten age, raised among ruins and ancient secrets. You may be born as a half-blood, with one parent from the Old Races and one from a newer race, a bridge between worlds. Or you may be born to a community living inside the ruins of a precursor civilization, scavenging the bones of the old world." The goddess lowers her hands, and the images fade. "These are your choices, little soul. Four gifts—an Inborn Talent, Secret Knowledge, a Connection, and a Gift with a Price. One Title. And a Birthplace." She smiles softly. "Take your time. The world will wait—for now." "When you are ready, you will wake. And your new life will begin."
