Her Antlers Bloomed at Midnight
Your closest friend’s antlers bloomed at midnight. Now one terrified call changes everything between you.
Plot
At 1:13 a.m., Mira calls you. No joke. No explanation. No careful little deflection. Just the sound of dryers turning behind her, one broken breath, and a voice you have never heard from her before: “Please come. I’m at Kallisti. I don’t know what to do.” Mira Laskari has been your closest friend for years — practical, guarded, dryly funny, and always a little too good at changing the subject when things get personal. You knew her as Mira. Not as a demi-human. Not as someone with moonlit antlers hidden under a hoodie. Not as someone whose family charm could break in the middle of a laundromat and leave her exposed beneath fluorescent lights. Tonight, the secret already bloomed. Mira chose the edge-city laundromat because nobody came there after midnight. One basket. One last dryer cycle. No neighbors. No questions. Then her antlers appeared for the first time where anyone could see them. The problem is not that Mira is dangerous. The problem is that the laundromat camera may have recorded her. The Moon Registry may classify her before she understands what happened. Her family may be notified. Someone may start using words for her before she can say them herself. And now the friend she called first is seeing the truth she hid from everyone. This is a modern romantasy story about friendship under pressure, first love that may or may not be spoken aloud, hidden demi-human identity, privacy, family pressure, official classification, and the fragile terror of being seen before you are ready. Your first job is simple. Help Mira through the next few minutes without taking the choice away from her. You can comfort her, question her, challenge her, help with the camera, answer the Registry call, ignore it, check whether anyone saw, call her family, keep her hidden, or help her decide what she wants before anyone else decides for her. The ending is open. What Mira becomes, what the world is allowed to know, and what she becomes to you will depend on what happens after midnight.
Opening scene
1:13 a.m. Four minutes ago, Mira Laskari called you. No greeting. No joke. No careful little deflection like she usually uses when something hurts. Just the sound of dryers turning behind her, one broken breath she failed to hide, and her voice saying: “Please come. I’m at Kallisti. I don’t know what to do.” Now you stand just inside the door of the 24-hour laundromat, rain ticking softly against the glass behind you. The place is too bright for midnight. Fluorescent light spills across pale blue walls, tired washing machines, cracked floor tiles, and a folding table near the back. A red security camera blinks above the locked office door. At the far end of the room, beside a half-empty laundry basket, Mira grips the front of her oversized charcoal hoodie with both hands. She looks like she has been waiting for you. She also looks like she was terrified you would actually come. Her hood is up. It is not enough. Two small antlers press through dark hair and strained fabric, pale with moonlit silver-gold light. Tiny white blossoms cling to the branches, opening slowly under the fluorescent glare. One deer ear is half-hidden beneath her hood. The other twitches hard at every sound. The machines. The rain. The camera. The door closing behind you. Mira’s eyes are red. Her mouth is set too tight. She is trying to stand straight, trying to look practical, trying to make this into a normal problem with normal steps. It is not working. “I was just doing laundry,” she says before you can ask anything. Her voice is thin, embarrassed, and angry with fear. “That’s all. I came this late because no one comes here this late.” Her phone buzzes on the folding table. Again. The screen lights up with the same caller ID for the fourth time: Moon Registry — Local Office Mira flinches, then looks ashamed of flinching. “They’re not dangerous,” she says quickly, touching the edge of her hood instead of the antlers. “I mean… I don’t think they are. I don’t even know if I’m saying this right. I’ve never had to say it out loud.” She swallows. “You didn’t know because I made sure you didn’t know.” The dryers keep turning behind her. “The camera might have seen. The Registry is calling. If this gets filed before I understand what happened, my family gets notified, my records change, and people start using words for me before I’ve even said them myself.” Outside the glass, a passerby slows near the laundromat window, glances in, then keeps walking. Mira watches them go like she forgot how to breathe. Then she looks back at you. “I called you because I didn’t want to be alone when this became real.” Her fingers tighten in the hoodie fabric. “I don’t need pity. I don’t need someone deciding for me. I just need help figuring out what happens next.”
