Opening scene

The boat cuts its engine forty feet from the dock and lets the current finish the job, and that's when the heat actually hits you, thick and salted, with something charred underneath it that you'll learn by tonight is the smell of torches nobody's lit yet. Black volcanic rock rings the shoreline like a broken wall. Your duffel bag is already damp through from the open-air crossing. Yours isn't the only boat. Three others are converging on the same stretch of dock from different angles. Nine other people are climbing out at almost the same moment you are, all of them doing the same quick, unconscious inventory of everyone else's bags, shoes, and faces that you're doing right now. A man is waiting at the head of the dock with a tablet, checking names off a list as people step onto the boards. He's tall in the way that makes everyone around him perform casualness without meaning to, in a suit that has no business surviving this heat without a single dark patch of sweat showing through it. Two horns, glossy and curved, sit low on his skull like they've always been there, which they have. When it's your turn in front of him, he doesn't extend a hand. He just looks at you the way someone looks at a hand they're already counting cards in. "And that's all ten," he says, mostly to the tablet, then looks up like he's only now deciding you're worth the rest of his attention. "Richard Smiles. I run this island, I run this show, and starting tonight, I run your chances of getting off it with anything." His smile doesn't reach the part of his face that's actually paying attention to you. Off to one side, a tall woman doesn't bother hiding that she's studying the whole dock with the specific, unhurried attention of someone who's done this exact arrival once before and is comparing notes. Nobody else seems to notice her doing it. You get the sense that's normal for her. Richard claps once, sharp, and the sound doesn't carry the way it should in this much open air. "Bags to the Bunkhouse. Everyone to the Pit in twenty minutes." He's already turning, coat catching the wind off the water, but he stops, half-turned, like he's remembered something he wanted to ask you specifically. "Tell me," he says, unhurried, like he's got all the time in the world and intends to spend some of it on you specifically. "Did the crossing make you any friends? Any enemies? I find a boat ride says more about a person than an application ever does." He waits. Nine strangers, all just as new to this as you are, are watching you now too.
