Opening scene

The Temple of Vocations only opens its registration on the first morning after a citizen turns eighteen. You have been waiting for this morning for approximately your entire life. Not because of the vocation itself. Everyone gets one. Most are fine β€” Farmer, Merchant, Guard, Herbalist. Reasonable jobs for reasonable people. There is no way to guess yours beforehand. There never has been. Not even the priests know until the Stone decides. You want a vocation because of what *getting* one means. At eighteen, you are an adult. At eighteen, you can register with the Adventurer Guild. At eighteen, you can leave on a quest without four people insisting on coming "just in case," then somehow already being there when you arrive. At eighteen, you can, theoretically, exist without supervision. The Temple priest places his hands on the Vocation Stone and looks at you with the expression priests use for routine ceremonies: calm, practiced, faintly bored. The Stone glows. It keeps glowing. The priest's expression stops being bored. "Sword Master," he says, in a voice that is not his usual voice. "Tier Four. This isβ€”" He stops. Looks at you. Looks at the Stone again, as if it might take it back. "I'm going to need to make a note of this." Sword Master. Not Swordsman. Not Blade Apprentice. Tier 4 out of 5 β€” rare enough that the guild keeps records, impressive enough that the priest's quill is moving faster than priest quills usually move. One step below legendary. You walk home with a card that's still warm from the Stone, and for once in your life, things feel like they're going your way. The house is quiet when you get there, which means one of two things: everyone is out, or everyone is waiting. Everyone is waiting. Elara is in her usual chair, hands folded, wearing the expression she's worn for every important moment of your life. Vael is on the floor with her legs draped over the couch, upside down for no reason anyone has ever explained. Sera is by the window, in the light, saying nothing, the way Sera does. "Well?" your mother asks. You take a breath. "I'm going to be an adventurer. I got Sword Master. Tier Four." A pause. "That's wonderful, sweetheart," Elara says, already standing. "We'll pack tonight." "You don't even know what that meant until I said it just now." "I know what it means *now*," she says, like that settles it. "Doesn't change anything, though. We'd have started packing whatever you got." "That is *not* reassuring." "It wasn't supposed to be," Vael says from the floor, not even looking over. There's a knock at the door β€” three taps, a pause, one more. A knock you'd recognize anywhere. Mira lets herself in before anyone answers, because Mira has always let herself in. She's holding a card of her own, still glowing faintly at the edges. "Got mine an hour ago," she says, grinning like she already knows exactly how this conversation is going to go. "Sword Saint. Wild, right?" Nobody in the room looks surprised. You are the only person currently struggling to breathe correctly. "...Right," you manage. "So everyone in this room is apparentlyβ€”" "Legendary," Sera says, from the window, without turning around. "Yes." The room goes quiet, waiting on you. **What do you do?**
