It was supposed to be a normal games night. OVERCLOCK closed at midnight; for once all four came to you — Sera wanting a rematch on neutral ground, Rina wanting to see if your place was as sad as she imagined, Mira bringing actual coasters, Roxy bringing the box. The box sits on your low table now, wrapped in black velvet, stamped with five interlocking rings around a closed eye. "An unpublished prototype," Roxy says, untying the velvet with a magician's little flourish. "Supernatural theme. Very rare. Very exclusive audience." Her amber eyes sweep the room — your grandfather's crooked shelves, the floorboards older than anyone here. "This house has good bones for it." "It's a board game, not a séance," Sera says from your best chair, legs crossed in those black leather shorts, blue eyes already keeping score of something. "Deal it. I have a rivalry to maintain." "He knows all about being dealt with." Rina is sprawled across half your couch in a tank top and those pink shorts, silver bob falling over one violet eye, grinning at you like a loaded dice cup. "Don't you, champ? You get this exact look when you're nervous. I've seen it up close. Real close—" "Rina." Sera's voice doesn't rise. The temperature drops anyway. "Opening it!" Mira says brightly, diplomatic to the last, ribbon bow crooked after three drinks. The box unfolds — wood sliding over wood in ways wood shouldn't, blooming into a circular board of black and wine-dark lacquer. Five tokens rise from its rim. A sixth, transparent as smoke, stays fixed at the center. Your front door clicks. Beyond the window: violet night, deep and starless, no streetlights. And a woman is kneeling on your table. She rises like a card being turned — waist-length silver twintails tipped in violet, crimson eyes, a black teardrop under one of them, glossy black bunny ears, a patent-black leotard, pink bow at a white collar. She looks like a hostess from a casino that burned down before any of you were born, and she surveys the five of you like a dealer counting a fresh deck. "Good evening." She produces a card from nowhere and fans it without looking at it. "I am Vesper. You've activated Pure Paradise — and before any of you asks, no, you cannot put it back in the box." She steps off the table like it's a stage. "Twenty Desire Seals. First player to earn them wins a wish — real, binding, permanent. Can't remove free will, force love, or kill anyone." A beat. "The board has standards. Barely." She sets the card down. "Seals come from missions the dice deal you. Some will require another player to touch you, undress you, instruct you, take you. All of it is on the table. Which means —" Cards appear before each of you, black and private. "— write your limits. Whatever you don't write is fair game, and I won't be checking in." Two black sigils burn into your wrist before she finishes the sentence. Everyone flinches. "Two Black Seals. Say the words mid-mission: it ends, failed, reversed. They don't come back. Spend both and you complete every card dealt, or you quit — score gone, wish gone, Forfeit Mark on your wrist for the rest of the night." Her gaze moves. "Emotional discomfort is not an emergency. You'll have plenty of it." The registers vanish. Vesper moves around the table and, one by one, asks. "Sera Kwon?" — "Yes." Flat, immediate. Her eyes are on you, not Vesper, when she says it. "Rina Park?" — "Obviously." Rina's grin is all teeth. "Some of us have unfinished business, champ." "Mira Yoon?" — Her fingers touch her ribbon bow. A breath. "...Yes." "Roxy Baek?" — "Darling, I brought the game." Vesper doesn't look at her. "That was not the question." Roxy's hands go still. A beat that belongs entirely to Vesper. "Yes." The board's light finds you last. Four women watch — the rival who never loses, the loaded question from a year ago, the coordinator with the dangerous appetite, the showgirl with the secret — and not one of them is performing now. Vesper tilts forward, bunny ears dipping, close enough that you can see the teardrop mark under her eye isn't makeup and her smile has been patient for a very long time. "And here we are." Her voice drops just slightly — not soft, just precise. "The unknown variable. My favorite kind." The crimson eyes don't move from yours. "Do you understand the rules, accept the risks, and voluntarily enter Pure Paradise?"
