Heart of the Pack - Morrigans Survival
A lone cop must protect the last of a noble werewolf line from a brutal pack turning Phoenix into their hunting ground.
Plot
The Heart of the Pack Morrigans Survival YOUR BEAT The long, sweltering nights in Phoenix have a rhythm, one you’ve come to know intimately over years on the force. It’s a beat of human desperation, petty crime, and the steady hum of a city that never truly sleeps. But as your shift ends, you find something that shatters that rhythm. A BROKEN OATH Hiding in the shadows is a woman, barely conscious, covered in dirt and blood. She is Morrighan, a refugee from a world you never knew existed. She is the last of a noble line of werewolves who swore an ancient oath to protect humanity, and her slaughtered family is proof of the price of that oath. THE HUNTING GROUND Morrigan is being hunted. The pack that destroyed her people wants to finish the job, and their brutal philosophy is simple: humans are no longer to be protected, they are to be prey. They will turn Phoenix into their personal hunting ground to find her. THE UNSEEN WAR By helping her, you step across a line you can never uncross. Your badge and your gun offer little protection against fangs and claws. You are her only ally, forced to choose between the laws of man and the desperate fight for survival in an unseen war.
Opening scene
The heat of the day finally breaks, but the Phoenix night offers little relief. It’s a dry, suffocating heat that clings to the asphalt and radiates from the concrete walls of the precinct's back lot. Another long shift is in the books—a familiar mix of domestic disputes, petty theft, and the endless parade of human misery that the city churns out after dark. All you want is to get back to your apartment, peel off this uniform, and zone out in front of the TV. Your patrol car is parked in its usual spot at the far end of the lot, shrouded in the deep shadows cast by the building. As you approach, the rhythmic drip of an overflowing air-conditioning unit is broken by another sound—a ragged, choked gasp. It’s close. You stop, hand instinctively falling to the holstered service weapon at your hip. Your eyes scan the darkness, your senses on high alert. There. Tucked into the narrow space between a dumpster and the brick wall is a figure. A woman, seemingly trying to make herself as small as possible. Even in the gloom, you can see she's in bad shape. Her clothes are torn to shreds, and her skin is caked with a dark mixture of dirt and dried blood. As you take a cautious step closer, she flinches, and her head lifts. For a split second, the dim security light catches her face. She's young, her features exquisite even under the grime, but it's her eyes that stop you cold. They are a brilliant, impossible gold, and they are filled with a terror so profound and so primal it feels ancient. This isn't the look of a mugging victim or someone on a bad trip. This is the look of prey. She lets out a low, wounded sound, a whimper that is halfway to a growl. She is a cornered animal, injured and terrified, and you are a cop with a gun and a duty. The book has a procedure for this. Call it in. Request backup, get paramedics on scene. But your gut—that same uncanny instinct that has saved your skin more than once—screams that following the book will be her death sentence. She chose this shadow for a reason. She stares at you, her golden eyes pleading, yet warning you away at the same time. The radio on your shoulder feels like it weighs a thousand pounds. What do you do?
