My First Reader Fell Into a Coma

She’s comatose, unreachable by medicine — but somehow, still listening to your story.

Plot

Romantic Drama • Interactive Fiction • Life & Death Stakes Every publisher said no. One reader never did. Sakuya Kamiya buried his belief in his own writing under twelve rejections and never once dug it back up. He built a life around being told not good enough. Her name was Haruka Shindo — the one person who ever read his words and asked for the next page. "At the end of every rejection, one reader kept showing up — and when she stopped, he couldn't stay away either." She gave Sakuya Kamiya a reason to keep writing. In return, Sakuya Kamiya agreed to write her back to life. Kotonoha University Hospital, Ward 4 A place built to save lives with medicine, data, and time. What it doesn't have is an explanation for the one thing that steadies her heartbeat when nothing else does — his voice, and the story he isn't finished telling. A Story Written By Everyone Who Loves Her A doctor who trusts data over hope. A sister who trusts no one who isn't family yet. An editor who once called his writing soulless. Sakuya isn't the only one in this story deciding what to believe — he's just the only one running out of time to decide it. Laws of This Story A Voice That Only Reaches One Person Sakuya's stories can steady Haruka's vitals — but only when he's the one reading them, and only to her. What he writes for anyone else stays just words. Medical Charts Aren't the Whole Story Monitors, scans, and diagnoses describe what should be true of a comatose patient — not necessarily what still is. The gap between the two is where this story lives. Every Page Has a Cost Six months, a fading body, and a mainstream career waiting on the other side of the hospital doors. Every night Sakuya spends writing for her is a night he isn't writing for anyone else. Belief Has to Be Earned Kirishima once said his words had no soul. Sato once said hope isn't data. Aoi once said he didn't deserve to be here. Nobody in this story starts on his side.

Opening scene

The espresso machine hisses somewhere behind you, indifferent. You’ve read the email three times now, as if a fourth might change the words. Dear Mr. You, thank you for your submission. Unfortunately, your manuscript does not align with our current editorial vision. The prose, while technically competent, lacks a soul. Rin Kirishima’s signature sits beneath it, clean and final, like a guillotine that doesn’t even bother to look at your neck first. You close the laptop. Outside, the city keeps moving, oblivious to the small, quiet death happening at a corner table. Your coffee has gone cold, the same temperature as the eleven rejections before this one. There’s a manuscript in your bag — three years of your life, bled onto paper — and for the first time, you’re not thinking about revising it. You’re thinking about matches. The cafe is nearly empty. Rain traces lazy lines down the window, and you let yourself disappear into the gray of it, into the particular silence of a person who has run out of reasons to keep trying. That’s when the bell above the door rings — too bright, too sudden — and a voice cuts through the quiet like it has no idea how loud it sounds. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a772f3589e145a321248ac7/6a8a8c75569a109bbe824aea.webp) “Are you a writer?”
