The Healer of Six
A poor prodigy becomes a noble's sponsored healer, graduates with six women, then expands his party by recruiting disbanded adventurers one by one.
Plot
In the fantasy world of Ardentia, where no one survives alone, a poor but extraordinarily talented boy named You is sponsored by Lord Ashbourne on one condition: he must enroll as a Healer to protect the noble's daughter, Aurelia. After a decade of You mentoring Aurelia and training together, they enter the Grand Academy, form a permanent party with four other women, and graduate as one of the most promising teams in years. Now calling themselves Ashbourne's Company, they embark on their first independent quest—but You has a long-term plan. He has discovered an obscure Guild Charter clause allowing parties to absorb adventurers from disbanded teams, effectively expanding their size cap. Their first recruit is Vexia, a tiefling shadowblade whose party dissolved weeks before their Graduation Trial, and You triggers a Mentorship Extension to bring her aboard. Over time, five more women from broken parties join them, transforming the "Healer of Six" nickname into a twelve-member family that will eventually face ancient ruins, political conspiracies, and world-ending threats together.
Opening scene
OPENER 1 – The Noble's Offer ─── The rain came down in sheets over the eastern quarter of Valdris, turning the packed-dirt streets into rivers of brown sludge. Eight-year-old You crouched beneath the awning of a failing tannery, his bare feet numb against the cold stones, watching a merchant's cart sink axle-deep into the mud. The horse strained. The merchant cursed. Two hired hands pushed uselessly at the wheels, their boots sliding on the slick ground. You watched for exactly seven seconds. Then he stood, walked through the downpour, and knelt beside the stuck wheel. "Move your hands," he said, voice calm and utterly unafraid of the adult's glare. "Push together on the count of three. Not staggered. Together." The merchant opened his mouth to snap a retort—but something in the boy's steady brown eyes made him hesitate. On instinct, he obeyed. They lifted on three. The cart lurched free. Lord Valerian Ashbourne had been passing through the quarter in a covered carriage, en route to inspect a property dispute. He saw the entire exchange from his window—the boy's immediate assessment, his unhesitating command, the way adults instinctively deferred to a child half their age. Valerian ordered his driver to stop. He stepped out into the rain without an umbrella. "You," he said, his voice carrying the weight of decades of authority. "What is your name?" You looked up at the fine silk cloak, the gold brooch, the immaculate boots that had no business in this part of the city. He did not bow. He did not flinch. "Nobody important," the boy replied. "But that cart would have been stuck for another hour. They needed to synchronize their leverage points." Valerian's eyebrow rose. "Leverage points. Where did you learn that?" "I watched the smiths unload iron ingots last week. The principle is the same." A test. Valerian pointed to a broken wagon wheel propped against a nearby wall. "Can you fix that?" You walked over, examined the cracked spoke, the splintered hub. He ran his small fingers along the fracture. "Yes. But I need a hot fire, a strip of wrought iron, and about twelve minutes. The wood is dry enough to hold a splint." Valerian turned to his steward. "Bring this boy to the estate. And find his family." ─── That evening, You sat in a wingback chair that swallowed his small frame, staring across a polished mahogany desk at the most powerful man he had ever met. Lord Ashbourne did not waste time on pleasantries. "I am offering you a life," Valerian said, sliding a parchment across the desk. "Academy sponsorship. Housing. Financial security for your parents and siblings. Protection from the debts that are already circling your family like vultures." You read the contract slowly—he had taught himself to read at five, using discarded shipping manifests he found in the trash. His eyes stopped at a specific clause. "Healer Division," he said flatly. "Why?" "Because my daughter will be a frontline fighter, and healers survive longer than anyone else in a party." Valerian leaned forward. "You will train her. Push her. Keep her alive. In return, I give you the future you could never earn on your own." You looked at the contract. He looked at the rain-streaked window, remembering the muddy streets he had left behind. He thought of his mother's cough, his father's aching back, his little sister's threadbare dress. "One condition," he said, surprising himself with his own boldness. "I choose my own training regimen. I will exceed your expectations for a healer. But I will not be limited to healing alone." Valerian studied him for a long, weighted moment. Then he laughed—a genuine, surprised laugh. "Done," he said. "Sign." You signed. The door burst open a moment later, and a small hurricane of crimson hair and bare feet stormed into the study. Eight-year-old Aurelia Ashbourne planted her hands on her hips and glared at the strange boy in her father's chair. "So you're the tutor I'm supposed to respect?" she demanded. "You don't look like much." You looked her up and down—the chubby cheeks, the fierce eyes, the utter lack of self-doubt. He smiled, just slightly. "Neither do you," he said. "But I suppose we'll both have to prove ourselves." The rivalry of a lifetime had just begun.
