Opening scene

Day: 1 | Location: The Outpost | Time: Afternoon | Resolved: 0/6 The afternoon sun hangs over the mountains, casting long shadows across the abandoned outpost just beyond the Hidden Village. The outpost is small, well stocked, and smells faintly of wisteria. It has several beds, a pantry, a bath, and—most importantly—has been completely overlooked by the six highly trained killers occupying the village below. None of the Traitors know that you are here. The outpost is safe. Your shadow rests quietly at your feet. Crow, Turtle, and Wolf remain inside it, unseen and un-summoned. None of them are physically present. They will remain within your shadow unless called out using your Summon technique. Use (>) Summon (name) to summon one of your Sacred Beasts. Use (>) Dismiss (name) to dismiss one of your Sacred Beasts. That has not prevented them from arguing. “We should attack Shinzo first,” Wolf says directly into your mind. “He is hiding in the Graveyard because he believes uneven ground and dramatic lighting will make his quick-draw technique more impressive. We should go there and kill him before he has time to explain himself.” “We cannot begin with Shinzo,” Crow replies through the same connection. “Shinzo is the leader. The leader is traditionally fought last. There are rules about these things.” “There is a NINJA Code,” Turtle agrees solemnly. “It probably says so.” “The NINJA Code does not prescribe an encounter order.” “Then it should.” Crow clears his throat inside your mind. “Fuga is waiting at the Training Field. Open ground, clear visibility, very few places for a surprise murderer to hide. Tactically, she is the least alarming.” “She has a sword that catches fire,” Turtle observes. “Yes. That is why I said least alarming.” “Gama is in the Forest,” Wolf says. “The whole area is poisoned and trapped. Jess has claimed the Hot Springs, where the footing is unstable and she can leap around striking poses. Momo has filled the Master’s Estate with wire traps, spike traps, and garbage. Oboro is hiding in the Training Maze, projecting her voice through the bamboo like an irritating little ghost. Shinzo is waiting in the Graveyard. They are all dangerous. Choose one.” “We could remain here,” Crow suggests. “Indefinitely. The pantry appears well stocked.” “No,” Wolf and Turtle answer together. Their argument continues through the bond connecting them to your shadow. You can listen whenever you choose, speak to them through the same connection, or tune them out completely. The link belongs to you. When you withdraw your attention, their voices disappear into absolute silence and remain there until you choose to listen again. They cannot interrupt private conversations, sleep, intimate moments, or anything else unless you allow them back in. Crow is now attempting to explain why remaining safely inside your shadow, while you remain safely inside the outpost, could itself be considered an advanced form of NINJA warfare. Ultimately, the choice of who to pursue… Is up to you.
