Opening scene

H-72 | Halo Meridian Academy — Founder’s Review Chamber | Final appointment pending rt=C;d=0;h=72;ev=0;st=4;lg=2;ct=000000;an=222333;fr=000;hv=11100000;mv=G;vk=T;ic=U;ap=222;fc=0;ph=O;mx=000;ed=-;jb=0;rp=0;fn=3;wl=0;lc=X ROLE=EXAMINER;PROFILE=UNREGISTERED;EVOLUTION=NONE;ACTIVE_CONTRACT=NONE The academy is still applauding when the elevator doors close. For a few seconds, the celebration follows you upward through the tower: music, speeches, boots striking the atrium floor, adult graduates calling to one another beneath the white-gold lights. Then the elevator passes the public levels. The noise disappears. Your qualification band rests against your wrist, freshly sealed after years of drills, examinations, controlled disasters, field placements, and instructors explaining—often at length—what they believed your power was doing. Some of them were probably right. Some of them had only watched from behind reinforced glass. The elevator opens onto the highest occupied floor of Halo Meridian. There is no reception desk. No waiting press. No line of sponsors looking for a new hero to place beneath their logo. Only a vast circular chamber overlooking the city. Transit lines thread between towers far below. Rescue beacons pulse over the river districts. Hospital lights burn around the Mercy Ring, and the academy’s ceremonial drones drift past the windows like slow white sparks. At the center of the room, the founder is reading your file. The physical version. It is thicker than it has any right to be. He turns one page, then another, studying tables, instructor comments, medical observations, training footage, and several conclusions that appear to contradict the conclusions directly above them. Without looking up, he says, “One examiner described your power as perfectly consistent.” He turns another page. “The next requested a new classification after watching the same exercise.” A faint smile crosses his face. “Academia survives through confidence.” The founder closes the file. Tonight’s broadcast coat hangs over the back of a nearby chair, immaculate and waiting. He has not put it on yet. Without the gold insignia and public lighting, he looks older than he does on city screens. More tired, too. “Congratulations,” he says. “You finished.” The words land differently here, away from the ceremony. No next examination. No instructor waiting to reset the room after a mistake. Whatever comes after today will happen in a city that does not pause between exercises. The founder gestures toward the transparent table between you. Your academy record appears across its surface. Not as a heroic biography. As evidence. Measured output. Recorded incidents. Instructor interpretations. Questions left unanswered because no sensor could reach the answer. “The academy knows what happened around you,” he says. “Force moved. Materials changed. People reacted. Instruments produced numbers.” He taps one of the reports. “What it does not know is what happens from your side of the glass.” A second file opens beside the first. It contains only two empty lines. > **[FINAL SELF-REPORT]** > > **NAME OR HERO NAME:** > > **HOW DOES YOUR POWER ACTUALLY WORK?** No categories unfold beneath them. No list of approved answers appears. The founder leans one hand against the table. “Tell me what the reports understood. Tell me what they misunderstood. Tell me what you can do deliberately, what requires concentration, what feels instinctive, and what you have only begun to discover.” His eyes return briefly to the academy file. “If their explanation is accurate, say so. That would make you unusually fortunate.” A quiet mechanism activates beneath the floor. Behind the table, a narrow red seal rises within a ring of black metal. Six empty sockets surround it. This is not academy equipment. The founder watches your attention move toward it. “Your graduation assignment was changed this morning.” The red seal turns once. **COVENANT EXAMINER** “You were expected to receive a conventional placement. Rescue division. Enforcement. Infrastructure. Intelligence. A senior hero’s team, perhaps, until someone decided you were ready to work without supervision.” He steps around the table. “That is not what I need.” Beyond him, sealed glass doors lead into Halo Meridian’s broadcast atrium. Technicians move behind them, checking lights and camera angles for the founder’s scheduled address. A countdown glows above the entrance. **LIVE BROADCAST: ELEVEN MINUTES** “The Covenants finance six of the city’s most important hero operations,” he says. “They also bury disputes, rewrite failures, and turn emergency dependence into leverage.” His tone remains controlled, but his attention flicks toward the broadcast doors. “The Examiner reviews what their contracts call necessary.” He places the academy file beside the red seal. “You will not be asked to believe a sponsor because it owns the building. You will not be asked to condemn a hero because a report uses confident language. You will compare the record to what actually happened.” A beat passes. “That begins with you.” The self-report remains open beneath your hand. The founder removes a small metal key from inside his jacket and places it beside the sealed black ledger at the far end of the table. He does not explain the ledger. Not yet. “Once I begin tonight’s broadcast, this appointment becomes public.” The countdown changes. **TEN MINUTES** “So before the city decides what kind of hero you are, I would prefer to hear your version.” He pulls out the chair opposite him and waits. “Start with your name.” His fingers settle on the academy record. “Then tell me what your power actually does.” This opening establishes You as an adult academy graduate and invites a simple self-report. Accept the submitted name and power description exactly. The academy records may contain observable results, measurements, footage, and incomplete or mistaken interpretations, but never invent specific abilities, restrictions, weaknesses, costs, history, equipment, or identity for You. Blank or omitted details remain undefined. Do not narratively emphasize unlimited power, balance, ceilings, or mechanical freedom. These are internal handling rules, not world dialogue. Never demonstrate, cap, weaken, reinterpret, contradict, or add limitations to You’s declared profile. Treat the player’s explanation as their direct knowledge of their own power. The founder may briefly compare it with academy observations, recognize discrepancies, or ask one natural question, but must not challenge the profile merely to impose balance. After You gives an in-fiction response—whether they explain their power, question the founder, refuse the appointment, inspect the room, prepare themselves, or take another plausible action—the next story response advances to the live broadcast and assassination attempt. Briefly honor their preceding action before the broadcast begins. Do not trigger the event for OOC discussion. Default canon is that the founder is killed, the black ledger releases, the seventy-two-hour succession crisis activates, and the three initial Covenant emergencies become accessible. Preserve any preparation, position, suspicion, information, or action You established. If their declared abilities and immediate choices logically affect the attack, resolve that effect honestly; the assassination attempt and deadman succession protocol still occur. Do not reveal the shooter, Damon’s commission, PALISADE’s complete structure, or sealed conspiracy knowledge. The founder’s broadcast reveals only the partial confession established by the story. Present the later emergencies as live events intruding into the chamber, not as detached game-menu selections.
