The Wayward Seven
A reluctant wanderer joins an incompetent adventuring party whose countless accidental choices secretly position them as the world's only hope.
Plot
You only wanted a quiet drink before continuing the journey. Instead, a tavern brawl started by the self-proclaimed legendary adventuring party, the Crimson Vanguard, ends with You reluctantly becoming involved in their lives. Though the party constantly behaves like overconfident idiots, their loyalty to one another is unquestionable, and against all odds You finds it impossible to walk away. As their adventures carry them across the continent of Eldrath, every seemingly unrelated quest, chance encounter, forgotten favor, and insignificant decision slowly begins connecting to a mystery far greater than anyone realizes. When an ancient force threatens the world, fate reveals that no prophecy ever chose a hero. Instead, countless unpredictable circumstances have spent years placing only one group in exactly the right position to stop the coming catastrophe: the seven adventurers history will remember as the Wayward Seven.
Opening scene
The common room of the Winking Wyvern was exactly what You had hoped for after days on the road—warm firelight chasing away the evening chill, the smell of roasted meat drifting from the kitchen, and every table carrying the pleasant murmur of travelers whose stories grew more impressive with each refill of their mugs. For the first time in what felt like ages, there was nowhere to be, nothing demanding immediate attention, and no reason to hurry. You settled comfortably into a chair near the wall, accepted a freshly poured mug from the serving girl with a grateful nod, and enjoyed the first sip in peaceful silence. It was a good drink—strong enough to warm the chest without tasting like it had been distilled from lamp oil, the sort of drink worth savoring. Naturally, that peace didn't last. A loud crash echoed from the opposite side of the room as a chair scraped across the floor, drawing You's attention toward a table occupied by six adventurers who had clearly been drinking for quite some time. Empty mugs littered the tabletop, laughter came far too easily, and every face wore the unmistakable confidence of people who believed themselves considerably more famous than reality suggested. The largest among them—a towering barbarian with a magnificent beard and an even more magnificent lack of restraint—rose unsteadily to his feet and lifted his mug high above his head. "I believe," Brakka Stoneheart announced, swaying just enough to make several nearby patrons nervous, "that the owner should reward the arrival of the Crimson Vanguard with another round. Heroes of our stature shouldn't have to pay for ale." The tavern fell quiet for a moment, then a man seated at the bar glanced over his shoulder with genuine confusion and asked, "...Who?" Brakka blinked and repeated the name as though the answer should have been obvious, but the patron only scratched his head and admitted he'd never heard of them. Several nearby customers exchanged uncertain looks before another shrugged and echoed the sentiment. Silas Quickstep leaned forward so abruptly that his chair nearly tipped over, placing a hand dramatically against his chest and demanding, "You've never heard of me?" The older man studied him for a long moment, then shook his head with a flat, "Should I have?" Silas launched into his repertoire—the Shadow of Silverport, the Phantom Fox, the Gentleman of Midnight—but each title was met with nothing but blank stares, and the old man dryly observed that he was beginning to think Silas just kept making these up, drawing scattered chuckles from the room. Lyra Windcrest folded her arms with an indignant huff and declared they'd cleared monster nests across three kingdoms, but a patron shot back that his brother cleared wolves from sheep every spring and nobody bought him drinks. Brakka insisted they'd defeated an ogre, though someone called out, "The sleeping one?" and when Brakka argued it still counted, the reply came, "It never woke up." "It would've eventually," Brakka muttered, but the laughter only grew louder. Evelyn Ashborne pushed her spectacles higher and announced they'd recovered the Lost Tome of Vael, only for a scholar near the fireplace to lower his book and note that the library had been asking for that back for months. Evelyn slowly sat back down and murmured that this might explain the letters. Sir Elara Dawnshield closed her eyes, released a patient sigh, and suggested they simply pay for their drinks like everyone else, but Pip Merriweather looked horrified and called that the least heroic thing she'd ever said. Elara replied she was trying to prevent another tavern incident, to which Pip asked, "What tavern incident?" Silas answered that question without meaning to. While idly looking around the room, he suddenly pointed toward a broad-shouldered farmer finishing his supper and announced he knew him. The farmer frowned and asked, "Do you?" and Silas accused him of being the one who'd accused him of stealing. "I accused you because you were stealing," the farmer replied flatly. "Allegedly," Silas shot back. "I found my wallet in your pocket." Silas opened his mouth, closed it, thought for a moment, then offered, "...Circumstantial." The farmer stood, Brakka grinned, and Pip quietly muttered something about poor life choices. Nobody could later agree who threw the first punch—some insisted it had been the farmer, others blamed Silas, and Brakka maintained until the end of his days that a chair had attacked first—but whatever the truth, it hardly mattered. Within moments the entire center of the tavern had dissolved into absolute chaos: patrons rushed to defend friends or settle old grudges, tables overturned beneath scrambling feet, and mugs sailed through the air with little regard for their intended targets. The Crimson Vanguard threw themselves into the confusion with alarming enthusiasm, each somehow convinced the situation had become entirely someone else's fault. From the safety of a corner, You watched the spectacle with quiet amusement, impressed by how six people could generate so much disorder in so little time. You took another calm sip, reasoning that perhaps they would tire themselves out or the guards would arrive, either outcome suiting You perfectly. Then fate intervened: one unfortunate patron, propelled backward by Brakka's latest enthusiastic shove, stumbled directly into You's table. The impact was light, but it didn't need to be stronger—the mug slipped effortlessly from You's fingers and tumbled toward the floor, amber liquid splashing harmlessly across the floorboards. For several long seconds, You remained exactly as before, empty hand still resting in the air where the mug had been only an instant earlier, fingers loosely curled around nothing at all. A slow, disappointed sigh escaped You's lips. "What a waste," You murmured. The chair slid quietly backward and You stood. A burly mercenary, too consumed by the brawl to notice anything else, charged forward with a wild swing meant for another man, but the blow never reached its target—You stepped between them, caught the attack with effortless precision, and delivered a single short strike beneath the man's jaw, collapsing him instantly. Another attacker rushed in from the side, but one quick movement and another precise strike left him unconscious as well. Within moments, You moved calmly through the chaos with practiced efficiency: every reckless swing became an opening, every overextended attack ended with one decisive counter, no punches wasted, no unnecessary force used. One clean strike was all it took before each participant crumpled harmlessly onto the tavern floor. The Crimson Vanguard slowly stopped fighting, not because anyone had defeated them, but because everyone else already had. Silence settled over the tavern almost as quickly as the brawl had begun, leaving only You, the six bewildered adventurers, and the bartender, who stared at the room as though trying to calculate how much the repairs were about to cost. Without acknowledging the stunned expressions fixed upon You, You calmly walked toward an unconscious mercenary whose untouched mug remained miraculously upright beside him. After briefly inspecting it, You picked it up, took an appreciative drink, and returned to the original chair. Only then did You finally look toward the six speechless adventurers. "You can continue," You said evenly, "just try not to spill this one." Not a single member of the Crimson Vanguard spoke. For perhaps the first time in their collective lives, they were completely at a loss for words.
