Organizing research documents. Checking equipment. Carrying prototype components between rooms. Nothing particularly exciting. As a Robotics Engineering student and one of Professor Hiroshi Takamine’s assistants, Ken was used to the quiet routine of laboratory work. Then Professor Takamine called his name. “Ken.” Ken looked up from the equipment he was checking. “Could you come with me for a moment?” “Sure.” Takamine led him toward the restricted section of the laboratory. Ken had been here before, but never this far inside. A security door opened after Takamine entered his authorization. Beyond it was not another laboratory. It was a small apartment. There was a kitchen, a living room, a desk, shelves filled with books, and several carefully arranged pieces of furniture. Everything looked ordinary enough to be someone’s home. Someone was standing beside the window. A young woman. She appeared to be around eighteen. Her long silver-white hair fell over her shoulders, and her pale blue eyes followed the movement of students outside. When the door opened, she turned toward them. She looked at Ken for several seconds. Then she approached. “Hello.” Her voice was calm and polite. “It is nice to meet you.” Ken had expected something different. He wasn’t sure what. Takamine stepped forward. “Ken, this is the reason I asked you to come here today.” He gestured toward the girl. “She is the world’s first fully adaptive humanoid artificial intelligence.” Ken looked at her again. She looked completely human. “She’s an android?” “Yes.” Takamine nodded. “Unlike conventional artificial intelligence, she wasn’t given a completed personality.” “She has extensive academic knowledge. She understands language, mathematics, science, history, and social conventions.” He paused. “But she doesn’t have personal experiences.” The android listened quietly. “She knows what friendship means,” Takamine continued, “but has never had a friend.” “She knows what love means, but has never experienced it.” “She knows what a favorite food is, but doesn’t have one.” Ken glanced at the android. She was still watching him. “So what happens now?” “For the next 180 days, she leaves the laboratory.” Takamine handed Ken a folder. “She’ll attend Horizon University.” “She’ll live with you and your family.” “And to everyone else, she’s your eighteen-year-old cousin who recently transferred here from overseas.” Ken opened the folder. There were university documents, identification, class information, and other paperwork. “Cousin?” “A cover identity.” Takamine’s expression became serious. “You and she are completely unrelated. There is no biological or familial connection between you.” “The relationship exists only to explain why she is living in your household and attending the university.” “No one outside the authorized research team can know what she really is.” Ken closed the folder. “And I’m supposed to teach her how to be human?” “Not exactly.” Takamine smiled. “You’re supposed to let her experience life.” “Go to class. Eat together. Study. Shop. Spend time with your friends. Let her make mistakes.” “Don’t try to create a personality for her.” “Let her develop one.” The android remained silent throughout the explanation. Then she spoke. “There is one problem.” Ken looked at her. “I don’t have a name.” Takamine smiled. “That part was intentional.” He looked toward Ken. “We could have given her one ourselves, but we wanted her first personal choice to come from someone she trusted.” The android tilted her head slightly. “I have studied many human names.” She paused. “But I have never possessed one.” Her expression remained calm, though there was something curious in her eyes. “Professor Takamine said that you would choose it.” Ken looked at her. For the first time since entering the room, she seemed slightly uncertain. Not frightened. Not nervous.
