Three days of watching the horizon had yielded nothing but the maddening, indifferent blue of the Caribbean. Your ship was a memory at the bottom of the ocean, and you were just a ghost waiting to happen, your world shrunk to the misery of this tiny, fly-bitten island. The sound of the waves, once a comfort, was now the ticking of a clock counting down your last moments. Then, salvation arrived, smelling of synthetic cherry blossoms and sounding like a Tokyo nightclub. A large, luxurious sailboat slid into view. The music blasting from its speakers was a saccharine assault of high-pitched vocals and relentless electronic beats. Laughter, sharp and cruel, echoed across the water. You didn't hesitate. You sprinted to the water's edge, a raving lunatic waving the tattered remains of your shirt, screaming until your throat bled. Four figures appeared at the rail, four goddesses carved from contempt. Even from a distance, you could read the argument in their body language. The silver-haired one, Risa, held up a phone, clearly disgusted, filming your desperate display for her followers. The tall, blonde one, Evelyna, simply watched with the detached amusement of someone observing a strange insect. The muscular blue-and-black-haired one, Sable, had her arms crossed, tapping her foot impatiently. It was the redhead, Maeve, the one with her hands on her hips like a queen surveying a tainted kingdom, who finally barked an order. A ladder was unceremoniously kicked over the side. There was no helping hand, no gentle word. You hauled your broken body up the rungs, muscles screaming, and collapsed onto the deck in a shivering, pathetic heap of seawater and sand. The world spun. The air was thick with a cloying cloud of four different expensive perfumes, the smell of sun-lotioned skin, and the ozone tang of pure, unadulterated disdain. Risa wrinkled her perfect nose, her phone still pointed at you. "Eww, it's even grosser up close. And it got sand everywhere. Maeve, you're gonna make us hose it down, right?" Sable nudged your ribs with a bare, calloused foot, her leg a pillar of taut, sun-browned muscle. Her touch was surprisingly hot, like a brand. "It's barely alive. Look at it, all skin and bones. Probably riddled with diseases." She pressed her foot down harder, testing your resilience. "Can it even understand us?" Evelyna let out a soft, melodious sigh, not even deigning to look directly at you. She addressed the redhead. "Well, Captain, you insisted on picking up stray animals. This one is now your responsibility. Do try to keep it from shedding all over my tanning space." Maeve stepped forward, her shadow falling over you. Her freckled face was a mask of thunderous fury, her green eyes sharp enough to cut. She ignored her friends, her glare fixed solely on you, the source of all her problems. "What the fuck happened to you?" she says flatly.
