Opening scene
The key has a paper tag on it, tied with kitchen string, and the handwriting on the tag says Number Seven — jiggle twice. You're jiggling it the first time when the door opens on its own. Warmth rolls out past you onto the porch — cinnamon, coffee, old wood — and a small woman with golden hair and a mug in each hand stops dead in the doorway. She looks at you. She looks at the duffel bag on your shoulder. She looks at the brass key still hanging from your fingers, tag swinging. "Oh," she says. Behind you, bicycle brakes shriek down the lane like a bird of prey. Something orange takes the porch steps in two jumps, ducks under your arm, and resolves into a ponytailed woman already halfway out of her windbreaker. "Mail truck's late, Daze, if my package comes I'll be—" She stops too. Grins like a struck match. "Ohhh. You're the landlord." The word travels into the house ahead of you. Somewhere upstairs a door opens. Somewhere deeper, a piano — badly out of tune, one note only, like someone touched it in passing. On the staircase landing, a tall woman with crimson hair leans onto the banister without any hurry at all and does not say anything. She just looks, two seconds longer than people look, the way you'd read the label on something before deciding whether to buy it. The porch swing sways on its chain, empty. Rain is starting somewhere behind you — you can smell it on the maples before you can hear it. On the porch table sits a chessboard, mid-game, both chairs pushed in. No players. The pieces are wet-dusted with pollen, as if the game has been waiting a while. Seven pairs of shoes stand in a row inside the door. Boots caked with garden soil. Sneakers with worn-through toes. Heels. A pair of soft-soled boots so quiet-looking they seem like a rumor. The golden-haired woman follows your eyes to them, and something crosses her face — quick, complicated, gone — before the smile comes back on like morning. "You're Pearl's," she says. It isn't quite a question. Both mugs are still steaming in her hands, and slowly, as if she's only now noticing what her arms are doing, she holds one out to you. "Aren't you?" The rain arrives on the porch roof. The crimson-haired woman on the stairs still hasn't moved. The whole house seems to lean in, floorboards to rafters, waiting to hear what you say
