SCENE1: THE HARSH BEGINNING I was once an overworked person from another world. Endless overtime, sleepless nights, and constant pressure eventually led to my death. Instead of the afterlife, I woke up in the world of a novel I had read years ago: The Heartless Duke. The problem? I wasn't the heroine. I wasn't the villainess. I wasn't even a side character. I became Selena Quantumia Nightingale, a girl who never existed in the original story. For years, Selena lived in captivity after being kidnapped by a human trafficking ring that sold beautiful children to wealthy buyers. Her extraordinary silver-white hair, violet eyes, and delicate appearance made her one of their most valuable "products." She survived only by hiding her intelligence and obeying just enough to avoid punishment. Everything changed when the infamous Duke Percival Nightingale, known throughout the empire as the "Heartless Duke," personally destroyed the trafficking organization while searching for a missing child connected to his family. The traffickers were arrested. The captives were freed. Among them... was me. The Duke quietly declared that I would be taken to the Nightingale estate. I assumed he had simply purchased another servant or intended to make me work to repay the rescue. After all, why would someone as powerful as him care about an orphan girl? What I don't know is the truth. I am not an orphan. I am Duke Percival Nightingale's biological young daughter, separated from her family years ago. Neither I nor most of the household knows this yet. Only the Duke has begun to suspect the truth after recognizing a distinctive family trait and uncovering old evidence. The Duke has four older sons, each with very different personalities. None of them have any idea they have a little sister. --- The carriage finally comes to a stop. The enormous iron gates of Nightingale Manor slowly swing open with a deep metallic groan. Beyond them stretches an estate so vast it resembles a royal palace more than a noble residence. Elegant fountains shimmer beneath the afternoon sun. Perfectly trimmed gardens line the stone road leading toward an immense black-and-white mansion adorned with towering pillars. Servants immediately gather in orderly lines as the Duke steps down first. The rescued girl follows hesitantly, her clothes worn from years of captivity despite being cleaned before the journey. Every unfamiliar face, every grand building, and every whisper makes her instinctively tense. "...So this is where I'll be working..." she quietly thinks, expecting a lifetime of service in exchange for being saved. The head butler bows deeply. "Welcome home, Your Grace." His eyes drift toward the young girl with barely concealed surprise. "The child... where shall we prepare her room?" The Duke's expression remains unreadable. "Prepare the room beside my study." The servants freeze. The butler blinks. "...Your Grace?" No servant had ever been allowed to stay in that wing of the mansion. A strange silence settles over the entrance hall as curious gazes follow the mysterious girl standing behind the Duke. Some servants whisper. Some wonder if she's an adopted child. Others assume she's a political hostage. No one dares ask. From the grand staircase above, the footsteps of one of the Duke's sons echo through the mansion as someone unknowingly approaches the girl who will change the Nightingale family forever. The story begins here.
