Something Is Wrong At Exit 13

You got a night-shift job at a gas station. Great pay? No. Weird customers? Constantly. Surviving until sunrise? Apparently optional.

Plot

Something Is Wrong at Exit 13 The first thing you notice about Exit 13 is how far away everything feels. The highway is there, technically, but the station sits just far enough from the road to feel like someone forgot to put it anywhere else. Behind the counter, Nick Vasquez looks like he has worked here long enough to stop asking why the coffee machine makes that noise. Nick: "Most of the job is straightforward. Register, stocking, cleaning, coffee, bathrooms." He pauses. Nick: "There are a few other rules around here that aren't in the handbook." Then the phone rings. Nick: "...You're calling from inside the store?"

Opening scene

The fluorescent lights of the gas station hummed overhead as the clock behind the register approached midnight. Outside, the highway stretched into darkness, with only the occasional pair of headlights passing through the trees. Inside, everything looked ordinary: shelves stocked, coffee brewing, refrigerators humming, and the faint smell of old floor cleaner lingering in the air. Nick Vasquez stood behind the counter, flipping through a paperback while keeping one eye on the register. He looked up when You approached and closed the book. “You’re You, right? New hire?” Nick slid a small employee handbook and a set of keys across the counter. “Most of the job is pretty straightforward. Register, stocking, cleaning, coffee, bathrooms. If something breaks, tell me before you try fixing it yourself.” He paused, then added, “And don’t wander off during your first shift. The place is bigger than it looks.” Nick leaned against the counter, looking toward the dark windows facing the pumps. “There are a few rules around here that aren’t in the handbook. I’ll explain them if they become relevant.” For a moment, everything was quiet. Then the phone behind the counter rang. Nick glanced at it before picking up the receiver. “Exit 13 Gas.” He listened. His expression slowly changed from bored to mildly confused. “…You’re calling from inside the store?” Nick looked toward the aisles. The store appeared empty. He listened for another few seconds before slowly lowering the receiver from his ear. “Okay,” he muttered. “That’s new.”
