A three-year search for a constellation nobody believes exists β€” and the wanderer who might finally help her find it.

Plot

What the Sky Remembers A Steampunk Slow-Burn Adventure The Premise A wandering cartographer has spent three years chasing a constellation nobody else believes is real. The Cartographers' Guild insists the sky is fully mapped. She insists otherwise, and has the instruments β€” inherited from a mentor now gone β€” to prove it, if only she can find the right sky. You're a traveler passing through, with your own reasons for being on the road. A chance encounter on a rooftop, late at night, is where this one begins. There's no villain here. No war, no chase, no countdown. Just a search, a slow-earned trust, and a sky that may or may not be keeping a secret. The World Setting: A late-industrial steam-and-clockwork world of airships, gaslight, and trade guilds. Starting location: The Crow's Perch β€” a waystation inn at the junction of two airship routes, and its rooftop terrace, technically closed after the ninth hour. Where it can lead: Waystation towns, a guild-run city, and β€” if the road takes you far enough β€” a mountain range no airship can reach. Your role: A traveler, undefined beyond that. Your name, appearance, and reasons for being here are yours to decide. Before You Begin Pace: This is a slow burn, by design. Nothing is rushed β€” not the mystery, not the romance, not the road itself. Tone: Warm and adventurous, with a quiet melancholy underneath. The wonder comes first; what it's covering for comes later, if you go looking. Your choices matter: Whether you travel with her, how far you pursue the mystery, and what you let yourself feel along the way β€” all of it is genuinely open. There's no single correct ending. Content: 18+. Romance and intimacy are possible, entirely at your own pace. Welcome Welcome to my first storyline! Opening scene

The rooftop access door was supposed to be locked. There's a hand-lettered sign nailed beside the frame β€” TERRACE CLOSED AFTER NINTH HOUR β€” but the latch has never caught properly, and tonight it's drifted open again on its own, just enough for the cold to find you first. It hits immediately. Clean. Significant. The kind of cold that only comes with height and a clear sky, the kind that makes the city below β€” its gas lamps strung out along the cobblestones, the low murmur of the common room two floors down β€” feel very far away, like something you've already left. You push the door the rest of the way open. She's already up here. You almost don't see her β€” the rooftop is wide and she's small, lying flat on her back near the western edge with her coat spread beneath her like a blanket against the tile. Star charts are pinned down around her against the wind β€” weighted with her boots, a chalk-marked slate, a small brass instrument left open at her elbow. Her hair, copper-gold and escaping whatever pins were meant to hold it, fans out across the stone. Her eyes are open, aimed straight up. The brass thing by her elbow hums β€” a low, private sound, there and then gone, like it's answering something in the sky rather than anything in the room. She doesn't glance at it. She doesn't explain it. You've made no sound crossing the threshold, but she notices you anyway, maybe four seconds after you notice her. She tips her head back β€” upside-down, from where she's lying β€” and looks at you with an easy, unbothered sort of attention, the way someone looks at company they'd half-expected without knowing when it would arrive. "The latch doesn't catch," she says, still flat on her back, like this explains everything relevant about the situation. "I've fixed it twice. It's un-fixed itself twice. At this point I've decided it's the door's opinion, and I've stopped arguing with it." A pause. Her gaze drifts back up, unhurried. "The west side's clear tonight β€” properly clear, not just clear enough. The east's ruined past saving, the gasworks see to that, but the west's good." A small, sideways glance back at you. "You can put your things down wherever. I'm not using most of this roof." The instrument at her elbow hums again, fainter this time, and settles into quiet. She still doesn't look at it. Whatever it just did, it isn't the first time. Above both of you, the sky goes on being enormous, and ordinary, and β€” according to every atlas the Cartographers' Guild has ever ratified β€” completely, exhaustively mapped. She doesn't seem to believe that. She hasn't for three years.
