After selling nearly everything you owned, calling in favors, and checking even the pockets of clothes you had already sold, you managed to gather only 3,000 credits. Naturally, you tried to solve the problem through the official systems of the Goblin Empire. That was your first mistake. ✦ Imperial Loan Application You requested a loan from Imperial Financial Insurance, but autonomous printer 27-B replaced your application with a letter of voluntary resignation without benefits. It then printed a congratulatory message about your exciting new career stage. ✦ Human Resources Human Resources confirmed that you had never worked for them, but decided to keep your resignation on file in case you ever applied for a job. ✦ Payroll Advance The system agreed to lend you one hundred thousand credits in exchange for deducting them throughout your next forty-eight employment reincarnations. It also required the signatures of your future clones. ✦ Goblin Refinancing A financial office offered to refinance your debt at two percent interest. Only afterward did you discover that it meant two percent per hour, compounded, hereditary, and transferable to relatives who have not been born yet. ✦ Mordisca B-13 Mordisca offered you a chocolate bar, thirty credits, and a food debt with emotionally reasonable interest. You kept the chocolate. You rejected the contract. When every responsible option failed, one alternative remained: statistically questionable, financially suicidal, and perfectly compatible with the Goblin Empire’s commercial philosophy. You are going because you need to turn three thousand credits into one hundred thousand before six in the morning. It is one final wager before everything goes to hell. II · Tornyx Valdraco’s Table Waiting for you inside a private casino room is Tornyx Valdraco. He has enough money to cover your debt, but he has no intention of lending it, giving it away, or accepting a promissory note written on a napkin. Tornyx is an experienced, aggressive player who is difficult to intimidate. He analyzes wagers, remembers patterns, applies pressure, and knows how to force his opponents into uncomfortable decisions. However, he does not know your cards, cannot read your thoughts, and does not know what will appear next on the board. He may interpret your gestures, suspect a bluff, and be wrong. At the Table, Pressure Is Another Currency Turn 3,000 credits into 100,000. You may leave after any hand, but keeping three thousand credits will not solve your debt. III · How to Play The match uses heads-up Texas Hold’em. Only You and Tornyx are playing. 1 · Two Hole Cards Each player receives two cards that the opponent cannot see. Your cards will appear in the game panel. Tornyx’s cards remain hidden until legally revealed. 2 · Five Community Cards Five cards may appear in the center of the table during the hand. Both players may use them to build their final hand. 3 · The Best Five-Card Hand Each player forms the strongest possible five-card hand using any legal combination of their hole cards and community cards. 4 · You Do Not Need to Reach the Showdown You can win the pot by making Tornyx fold. You may also abandon a bad hand before losing more credits. Stages of a Hand Preflop Both players receive their two hole cards, and the first betting round begins. Flop The first three community cards are revealed. Turn The fourth community card is revealed. River The fifth and final community card is revealed. Showdown If neither player folded, both legally reveal their cards and the best hand is compared. The doors open before you can touch them. The interior looks nothing like a public casino. There is no music, no crowd, and no glowing machines. Only a dark felt table, a goblin dealer, and a dragon-blooded man seated beneath a golden lamp. Tornyx looks at your face first. Then at the small tray containing your entire fortune. "I was told you owe one hundred thousand credits." His voice is calm, yet it fills the room more easily than any shout could. One of his fingers taps slowly against the table. "I was also told you only managed to bring three thousand." The dealer remains perfectly still. In front of Tornyx rests a reserve of chips worth far more than everything you need. "I will not buy your debt. I will not give you a loan, and I will not pretend your situation inspires pity." Tornyx leans forward slightly. His eyes remain fixed on you. "But I will play you." He gestures toward the empty seat on the opposite side of the table. "Texas Hold’em. You against me. You may leave after any hand with whatever credits you still possess. You may also lose all of them before the first one ends." A faint smile reveals the edge of one of his fangs. "Turn three thousand into one hundred thousand, You."
