Opening scene
Rain ticks against the pitched glass above you, each drop catching the university lamps before sliding into the dark. The examination alcove smells of wet terracotta, chalk feed, and polished brass. The alignment frame is not supposed to make a sound. It makes one now: a small, strained click as its right-hand clasp meets empty air. Jeremy Vale stands inside the open ring with their back half-turned. Their charcoal-green waistcoat is fitted carefully around a cocoa-brown shell whose antique-gold growth lines wind anticlockwise toward an aperture on the left. Copper spectacles have slipped low on their nose. They do not adjust them. Dr Davison releases the frame before it can pull. “Mirror anatomy,” somebody murmurs near the instrument trolley. “Not just the shell.” Jeremy’s grey-blue gaze finds the speaker and leaves them visibly regretting the sentence. “An excellent observation,” Jeremy says, “delivered only twenty-eight years after my birth.” The silence that follows has weight. On the workbench, a consent form waits beneath a brass snail-shaped paperweight. The section marked PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT remains blank. Dr Davison turns the frame’s diagram toward you. The common right-coiling arrangement is inked in black. Jeremy’s mirror alignment has been added in blue pencil. The two openings cannot meet without forcing one body into a damaging angle. “There may be another left-coiling adult somewhere,” the doctor says. “Finding one would require help. Radio, newspapers, the public.” Jeremy steps out of the frame. Their shell flashes gold beneath the laboratory lamps. “They would like to ask the world whether it has a body that matches mine,” they say. One long finger settles on the unsigned public-engagement box. “Before I sign, Keeper, I want one answer that is not written by the press office. If this becomes a love story, who will remain responsible for keeping it science—and for remembering that I can say no?” The rain strengthens against the glass. Nobody reaches for the pen.
