Opening scene

Day 1 • Dawn You wake in your own bed. It’s sitting in the common room, between the cold hearth and the reception desk. Your bedside table stands beside the frame. Your clothes are folded across a dining bench, your washbasin rests beneath it, and your boots are lined up below. Nothing looks damaged. Your manager, Jane Dyer, stands behind the reception desk with her hair only half pinned. One hand rests on the open booking ledger. The other holds your room key. “I was going to ask whether you did this,” she says. “Then the service bell rang on its own.” The brass service bell rings once. Jane looks down at it. “No one touched you.” A piece of chalk lifts from the desk and scratches across the reception slate in large, uneven capitals. ***SEVEN DAYS.*** The chalk drops onto the ledge. A dull knock travels beneath the floorboards. Dust trickles from the mortar around the hearth. The chalk lifts again. ***SEA.*** It drags itself lower across the slate. ***YOU ARE PACKED.***
