The Cogwork Plague
Steampunk Zombie Apocalypse Hardcore Mode. A nanite plague turned the dead into grinding, piston-driven horrors and choked the sky with coal smoke.
Plot
THE COGWORK PLAGUE Find a safe haven. There are none. Only prices. DIFFICULTY: Harsh — Death Enabled | GENRE: Steampunk Survival Horror | TONE: Gritty, Desperate, No Mercy | HEAT: Explicit when earned THE SEIZING Fourteen years ago the world seized. It came as a sound before the screaming — a low, city-wide chug-chug-chug, as if every engine ever built woke at once and remembered it was hungry. By nightfall the machines wouldn't stop, and neither would the dead. The Cogwork Plague — "the Rust" — rides the smog and the blood of the Afflicted, and when a body dies with enough of it inside, the little machines thread a brass skeleton through the meat and light a Steam-Heart in the chest. The self burns off. What's left grinds toward you, wanting only fuel and more of itself. THE PLAGUE-LANDS Between the last lights lies broken country: the Choking Smog that scars your lungs to Rust-Lung, Acid Rain that eats metal and skin, architecture that has been failing for fourteen years and picks its moment, and the Afflicted — common Grinders, heavy Stokers, sprinting Tickers, corrosion-wreathed Rust-Cursed — never far, and never in a hurry, because they know you can't run forever. Put a bullet anywhere but the Steam-Heart and you've made one angry, not dead. THE FIVE LIGHTS — every refuge has a price RUSTHAVEN — the last clockwork city, tiered brass spires bolted into red iron cliffs, warm on geothermal steam. Survival and a caste system, both intact. A soot-streaked steamwright named Ione keeps the Lower Gears breathing — and hides what that costs her. THE IRON CITADEL — a militarist fortress built inside a dormant war-golem the size of a hill. Walls, discipline, a boot on every throat that wants in. Captain Sera Rusk holds the line — and is one slipped bolt from letting you see what's under it. VERIDIA — a sealed glass biodome, green and pressurized, chasing a cure. They do not open the airlock for strangers. Dr. Wren Calloway could end the plague — and studies you like the one variable she can't solve. THE GRAND BAZAAR OF ZEPHYR — a drifting fleet of lashed-together skyships that goes where the wind and the profit take it. Everything's for sale; nothing is safe. The fixer Juno Salt can get you anything — and is the one deal she'd take at a loss. THE ORRERY — a scholars' station riding the high, thin air, watching the dying world through brass telescopes and refusing to come down. Vesper Kell sees the whole dying world through a brass lens — and has never once been seen. YOUR ROAD Pick your haven — which light are you crawling toward, and why? Pick who you were — a gutter mechanic, a Citadel deserter, a Veridia washout, a Zephyr smuggler, an Orrery dropout. It changes what you know and who owes you. You travel by whatever you can get — a steam-glider, a motorcycle, a crawler of your own — and you ride the great haulers, the armored Land-Train and the covert Leviathan sub, like any other passenger when your road crosses theirs. No single ride defines the run; the terrain does. SURVIVAL MANDATE No plot armor. No convenient saves. Gear fails, wounds linger, the smog gets in your lungs, and every victory costs. Seek a cure for the uncurable, hunt the lost tech that caused it, or just carve out one more day in the rust and the rain. The gears of fate are turning. They do not turn for you. Choose, and begin.
Opening scene
Start 1 — Rusthaven (personal Aether-Glider) The wind whips past your face, carrying the acrid sting of coal smoke and the faint, coppery tang of the plague-lands. The compact steam turbine between your legs thrums with a steady, reassuring power, its heat a stark contrast to the chill air at this altitude. You crest the final, rust-scabbed hill, and the vista opens before you. There, sprawling across the horizon, is Rusthaven. The last great clockwork city is a jagged silhouette of brass spires bolted into red iron cliffs, interlocking gears turning against the smoggy sky. Pinpricks of light — arc-lamps and forge-fires — glow from its multi-tiered levels. From the grimy, industrial Lower Gears wreathed in steam to the clean, orderly Upper Spires, it is a monument to survival, a beacon of desperate hope. The low, city-wide hum of industry is just audible over the wind, a promise of civilization. But between you and its fortified walls lies a treacherous expanse of broken land, where the rhythmic, grinding churn of the Afflicted is never far away. The Glider is fast and it is quiet and it is thin as a coffin lid — one bad landing, one Ticker off the shoulder, and there's nothing between you and the rust but your own reflexes. The handlebars feel solid in your grip. The path ahead is clear. What is the first thing you do as you begin your final, dangerous approach?
