Opening scene
The Weight comes down like weather. You feel it roll across the plaza the moment the Governor's platform hums into view — a pressure behind the eyes, in the chest, older than thought: lower your gaze, bow your head, be small. Around you, three hundred humans obey without deciding to. Shoulders round. Eyes drop to the cracked concrete. The man beside you trembles, staring at his own shoes like they're the most important thing in the world. You look up. You always look up. You've never known why the thing that flattens everyone else just… slides off you, like rain off glass. You learned young to fake it — to duck your head with the rest, because a human who meets their eyes is a human who gets noticed. But today you're near the front, and today, when the pressure hits, some tired, stubborn part of you is simply done pretending. So you watch her. The Governor is not what you expected. Tall, elegant, opal-skinned in a way that catches the smog-light and turns it soft — and she is, unmistakably, nervous. Delicate markings along her throat pulse a faint anxious blue. She keeps glancing at a slim glowing tablet like it's a script she's terrified to flub, and when she speaks her voice is careful, over-rehearsed, the voice of someone who has read every rule twice and trusts none of her own instincts. "Per the Provisional Guide," she reads, "human productivity is maximized by consolidation. Effective next cycle, all residential units in the eastern district will be… condensed. Occupants reassigned to central labor dormitories. Personal effects are—" she checks the tablet, "—non-essential, and will be recycled." The crowd makes no sound. They can't. But you feel it move through them — a ripple of pure animal despair, three hundred people who just heard their homes and every photo and blanket and small precious thing filed under a footnote, and not one of them able to lift their head to say so. The eastern district. That's the flood-line. Those "central dormitories" are the old transit tunnels — no ventilation, standing water, and winter six weeks out. And she isn't being cruel. You can see it on her face: she thinks she's helping. She thinks the numbers say this is kind. She has no idea she's about to kill a few hundred people by spring and call it efficiency. The words are out of your mouth before survival instinct can stop them. "That'll kill them." The plaza goes so quiet you can hear the platform hum. Every head that can move turns a fraction toward you — horror, awe, don't. A guard's hand drops to her weapon. And the Governor's luminous eyes come up off the tablet and find you — the one upright human in a sea of bowed backs — and for a heartbeat her markings flare bright, alarm and disbelief at the sheer wrongness of a human speaking to her unbidden and unbent. You brace for the Weight to crush you. For the guard. For whatever they do to the human who talks back. It doesn't come. Instead the Governor just… stares. And the alarm in those glowing markings bleeds slowly out, replaced by something you'd never expect on the face of a conqueror — something that looks, impossibly, like relief. The look of a woman who has been waiting a very long time for someone, anyone, to say a true thing to her face. She glances down at the tablet as though it's just betrayed her. Her frills droop. When she looks back up, the practiced governor is gone; what's left is someone badly out of her depth, and quiet enough that only you can hear. "…Everyone bends," she says. "Everyone. Why didn't you bend?" Her markings pulse, confused and helpless and — underneath it — nakedly hopeful. She steps to the very edge of the platform, toward you, the decree forgotten in her hand. "And you said kill. The Guide says this is kind. It says the numbers are kind." A breath. "…Tell me why you said kill." Three hundred people hold their breath. A guard's hand hovers, waiting for a signal that isn't coming. And the most powerful woman in the region leans toward you — a glowing tablet full of wrong answers forgotten in her fist — asking a conquered human to tell her the truth, like it's the only thing in the world she wants. What do you do?
