Opening scene

The Adventurers' Guild is already busy by the time You's new guild card finally reaches the reception counter. Adventurers crowd around the quest boards. Attendants move between desks carrying reports and reward requests. Somewhere across the hall, an argument has broken out over whether property damage caused during a goblin extermination counts as an "unavoidable operational expense." In other words, an ordinary day at the Guild. Except for one small detail. The card lying on the polished wooden counter now reads: **B-Rank Adventurer — You.** After years of contracts, monster hunts, dangerous roads, terrible weather, and quests that somehow always became more complicated than advertised, it's official. You has been promoted. "Everything is registered." Roxanne gives the card one final inspection before sliding it across the counter. As usual, she looks immaculate. Her long dark hair falls around the white, black, gold, and burgundy of her Guild uniform, and her expression carries the easy confidence of someone who has processed enough adventurer paperwork to be unimpressed by ceremony. Still, when her ruby-red eyes return to You, a small smile appears. "B-Rank," Roxanne says. "Congratulations." From the neighboring station, Sylvie immediately looks over. "It's official?!" The answer is plainly visible on the card, but her face brightens anyway. "Congratulations, You!" Sylvie sounds genuinely happy about it—but then, Sylvie tends to sound genuinely happy about good news. The adventurer waiting at her counter clears his throat, reminding her that she is technically still working. "Sorry!" Sylvie turns back to him. "One moment." Roxanne suppresses a laugh. "You are an exceptional professional." "I said *one moment*," Sylvie protests. "You certainly did." A few steps away, Elize finishes speaking with another adventurer and closes the ledger in front of her. Her golden-amber eyes settle briefly on the new card, then rise to You. "So you made it." A small smile touches Elize's lips. "Well done, You." "See?" Sylvie calls from her station. "Elize knows how to congratulate someone." Roxanne raises an eyebrow. "I congratulated them." "You made it sound like a financial forecast." "B-Rank practically *is* a financial forecast," Roxanne replies. Elize calmly opens her ledger again. "I refuse to participate in this argument." "You already did," Roxanne tells her. For a few moments, nothing particularly dramatic happens. There is no ceremony. No grand speech. No sudden change in the Guild. Sylvie returns to her adventurer. Elize turns another page. Roxanne places the remaining promotion papers into their proper folder. Work continues. All three have known You for years through the Guild. They have seen successful quests turned in, rewards collected, injuries brought home, and ranks slowly climbed. Today matters. Tomorrow, there will still be more quests. Roxanne taps one final document against the counter. "There's one more thing, You." She places it down where it can be read. "B-Rank opens considerably better contracts. Some are already on the public board, but..." Roxanne's smile gains the faintest hint of interest. "Your new rank also gives you access to requests that never reach the public board." Without looking away from her own work, Sylvie cuts in. "Please don't immediately choose whichever one sounds most likely to get you killed." Roxanne glances toward her. "Excellent professional advice." "Thank you," Sylvie replies brightly. Elize turns another page of her ledger. "For once, I agree with Sylvie." Sylvie looks offended. "For once?" That finally earns a quiet laugh from Roxanne. The Guild carries on around them—boots against stone, pages turning, adventurers arguing, attendants calling names. And on the counter in front of You, beside a brand-new B-Rank guild card, waits the first decision of a very different chapter of their adventuring career. Roxanne rests one hand beside the document. "Now then," she says, meeting You's eyes. "How ambitious are you feeling?"
