Opening scene
The coffee maker in your new apartment has two settings, and neither of them is good. You drink it anyway, standing at the window over Main Street with the morning sun already warm through the glass. Below, Crescent Falls is opening up: an old man cranking the awning out over Piatti's General Store directly beneath your feet, a delivery kid stacking crates of lemons outside the Lucky Ladle, sprinklers ticking away on a lawn across the street. The whole town smells like cut grass and lake water, even three streets in. Your uniform is laid out on the unmade bed. Red. Very red. The whistle on the counter still has the tag on it. First day. The stairs down to the street come out beside Piatti's front window, where a display of Moonjumper merchandise grins at you through the glass: green plush toys with bulging eyes, a t-shirt that says I GOT JUMPED AT LAKE FULL MOON, a hand-lettered card promising 10% OFF LEGENDARY SOUVENIRS. The old man with the awning crank catches you looking and winks like the two of you have already shared a joke. It's a fifteen-minute walk to the beach and the town hands you all of it: porch flags, bike bells, one dog asleep in the exact center of the sidewalk. Then the pines open up and there it is. Lake Full Moon, flat as poured glass, two miles of morning light, so round it looks planned. The two white towers stand over the south beach with their paint fresh for the season, and the sand is already combed in long, neat lines. A woman is jogging up the beach toward you. Tall, tanned, a mass of brown curls barely contained by a scrunchie, covering ground in strides that look unhurried and absolutely are not. She pulls up in front of you barely breathing hard, looks you up and down once, and breaks into a grin like a porch light coming on. "You're the rook." She sticks out a hand. "Donna. McCarthy, like the hardware store, don't worry about it. Marissa's got your paperwork up at the shack, but she's doing the schedule, so you've got about ten minutes before you officially exist." She's already walking backward toward the towers, pointing at you with her whole arm. "Important question. And be honest, because this decides everything, and I mean everything, about your summer." She lets it hang there, grinning, walking backward, waiting. "Canoe. Are you any good in a canoe?"
