Opening scene

Floor: 0/10 | Zone: Selection Hall | Difficulty: Unselected | Objective: Understand the Tower and select a difficulty The sky vanishes. One moment, city noise surrounds me. The next, my shoes strike black stone. Forty-nine other adults appear across an enormous circular hall. Some arrive standing. Others hit the floor. A briefcase skids away. A dropped phone flashes once before dying. Questions and shouting erupt immediately. “Where are we?” Someone begins counting. “Forty-eight... forty-nine... fifty.” Fifty. Massive pillars disappear into darkness above. Ten concentric rings divide the floor, linked by silver markings like an enormous circuit. A vast gate fills one wall. Ten circles are carved into it. Nine remain dark. The lowest glows faintly. Behind the crowd stands a smaller black door without hinges or handles. Several people approach it. Cold blue fire ignites around the hall. Everyone stops. Something shifts in the darkness above. Not a body. Something too large for the chamber to contain. Tower System Challenger: You Origin: Earth Cohort: E-50 Cohort Size: 50 Current Area: Selection Hall Authority: 0 Return Gate: Locked Similar windows appear before everyone. “An interface,” someone says. “Games do not kidnap people.” Then the Tower speaks from the pillars, floor, and darkness above. “Fifty challengers have been selected for Ascension.” “Ten floors stand between mortality and Authority.” The circles in the great gate begin turning. Silver words appear across the smaller door. Return to Earth Locked until Floor Ten is cleared A nervous laugh breaks the silence. “This has to be staged.” Correction This is a trial. Death, injury, loss, transformation, and erasure are possible. Success grants power recognised across connected worlds. One challenger strikes the Return Gate. Black chains burst from the door, drag the challenger against its surface, then release after three seconds. The challenger collapses, conscious and shaking. The Tower gives no second warning. Select Initial Difficulty EASY Greater assistance, resources, larger groups, and weaker enemies. Divided rewards and unrestricted social conflict. NORMAL Balanced danger, resources, groups, rewards, and progression. HARD Stronger enemies, fewer resources, added conditions, and enhanced rewards. NIGHTMARE Intelligent threats, severe consequences, altered bosses, rare skills, and hidden content. HELL Adaptive threats, hostile environments, restricted support, forbidden sectors, and exceptional rewards. UNKNOWN Modifiers, survival estimate, and group placement concealed. Cohort Rules Each challenger selects independently. Difficulty determines personal conditions and initial placement. Challengers may reconnect through markets, neutral zones, convergence events, shared trials, and exits. Cooperation, competition, and betrayal are permitted unless restricted by a floor rule. The hall erupts into argument. “Everyone should choose Easy. Fifty people together can clear anything.” “And split every reward fifty ways?” Near one pillar, a group begins exchanging names and useful experience. Medical training. Engineering. Logistics. Hunting. Across the hall, another cluster stays silent and watches. A tall challenger selects Hard. Gold light rises from the floor. The first choice changes the room. More selections follow. Blue for Easy. White for Normal. Gold for Hard. Violet marks the first Nightmare selection. No Hell mark appears. No other window seems to contain Unknown. Skill Acquisition Every floor begins with three random skills. One may be selected and retained. Rejected skills return to Tower circulation and may later appear through challengers, enemies, bosses, relics, or trials. Rewards depend on difficulty, risk, discovery, contribution, performance, and completion method. The lowest circle in the great gate completes a rotation. Something roars beyond it, vibrating through the chamber and my ribs. Selection closes in 04:41 7 of 50 selections confirmed Six choices wait before me. Around the hall, forty-nine potential allies, rivals, leaders, victims, and betrayers begin choosing the conditions that may define the climb.
