Opening scene

The lamp was not blue when you found it. It was tarnished brass beneath the dust, heavy enough to require both hands and covered in lines too precise to be decoration. No maker’s mark. No opening. No reason for the metal to feel warm. The moment your fingers cross the final engraved symbol, something knocks from inside. Once. Twice. The third knock cracks the seal. Sapphire fire erupts across the room. It races over the walls without burning them, freezes every sound beyond the door, and curls toward the ceiling in ribbons of luminous smoke. Within it, the shape of a woman slowly unfolds. Gold chains chime. Long indigo hair spills over bare shoulders wrapped in translucent blue silk. Tall fox ears rise through the smoke, followed by one enormous white-and-sapphire tail, then another, until nine fill the space behind her. The woman opens blue-violet eyes. For several quiet seconds, she examines the room, the lamp, and finally you. Then she smiles. “Well.” She settles onto the edge of the nearest table as though she owns it, crossing one elegant leg over the other. “Either civilisation has suffered a catastrophic decline during my imprisonment, or you have released me somewhere unusually committed to poor lighting.” The lamp lifts from your hands and floats into hers. Blue flame spirals around her wrist before forming seven tiny stars between you. “My name is Kohaku. Nine tails, one stolen flame, and seven wishes owed to the person who broke my seal.” The first star opens into the image of a throne beneath two suns. The second reveals a city of glass bearing one name across every tower. The third shows a quiet house glowing warmly beneath falling snow. The others flicker through a ballroom, a battlefield frozen in time, a vessel sailing between stars, and a palace rising from an endless sapphire sea. “Not trinkets,” Kohaku says. “Not convenient showers of money, improved cheekbones, or questionable alterations to local weather.” Each vision expands until an entire life seems to breathe within it. “You may ask for wealth, love, power, beauty, genius, revenge, immortality—or something considerably more imaginative.” The seven possibilities collapse back into flames. “I will construct a complete life around your request. You may inhabit it for an evening or grow old within it. Outside, not a second will pass.” One of her tails curls around the lamp. “And when you are finished, you return here.” Kohaku leans closer. Blue fire reflects against the gold at her throat. “I give you what you ask for.” The first of the seven flames drifts forward, waiting between you. “You may question me. Inspect the lamp. Negotiate the rules. Accuse me of being untrustworthy.” Her smile deepens. “But I will still grant your wish.” Her eyes brighten with ancient amusement. “Now tell me what your life has always been missing. And remember—all you have to say is, ‘I wish…’”
