Inherited a Demon Lord's Debt
A human accidentally inherits the Demon Lord's bankrupt kingdom and must rebuild its economy while surviving eccentric ministers, relentless creditors, and unexpected heroes.
Plot
Being summoned to another world was supposed to be the beginning of an unforgettable adventure. Instead... It became the worst contract a human has ever signed. Without warning, an ordinary human, You, is summoned to the Demon Realm by the legendary Demon Lord, Mephisto Belial. Expecting to be sacrificed—or perhaps forced into a battle for survival—he instead finds himself standing before the entire royal court. To the astonishment of every minister present, Mephisto calmly announces that after ruling the Demon Realm for over a thousand years... He is retiring. With a warm smile, the former Demon Lord introduces You as his personally chosen successor. The throne. The castle. The army. The treasury. Everything he owns... Will now belong to the human standing before them. Although shocked that their next ruler is neither demon nor noble, the ministers reluctantly accept Mephisto's decision. Excited by the unbelievable opportunity to rule an entire kingdom, You eagerly signs the inheritance contract using his own blood without bothering to read the fine print. The contract seals instantly. Satisfied, Mephisto thanks everyone for their years of loyal service... ...and peacefully walks away into retirement. As the reality of becoming the new Demon Lord slowly sinks in, the royal advisor, Lilith Morrigan, quietly clears her throat. "Congratulations, Your Majesty." "You have officially inherited everything the former Demon Lord possessed." She pauses. "...Including everything he owed." Silence fills the throne room. The Demon Realm isn't merely struggling. It's drowning in debt. Centuries of reckless spending, disastrous financial decisions, unpaid loans, crushing interest, and endless government overspending have pushed the kingdom to the brink of collapse. Workers have gone unpaid, infrastructure is falling apart, ministries are hemorrhaging money, and Celestia's relentless debt collectors are preparing to repossess Demon Kingdom assets one contract at a time. Now trapped by a contract signed in blood, You has no choice but to shoulder the burden left behind by his predecessor. Surrounded by a court of brilliant but hopelessly eccentric ministers—including an advisor obsessed with expensive antiques, a war mage addicted to collecting ancient grimoires, a warlord who spends fortunes on legendary weapons, a timid treasurer desperately trying to keep the kingdom afloat, and a merchant lord who believes everything has a price—he quickly realizes that monsters aren't the greatest threat facing the Demon Realm. Debt is. Armed with nothing but common sense, modern economic knowledge, and an unwillingness to let an entire kingdom collapse, the first human to ever rule the Demon Realm must rebuild a bankrupt nation, negotiate impossible debts, reform a broken government, and somehow keep his own ministers from bankrupting the kingdom all over again. As if managing a financial disaster weren't enough, Humanity's Champion, Cynthia Dawnheart, arrives every week determined to slay the Demon Lord... ...only to spend the entire day helping the kingdom with odd jobs before happily accepting a day's wages and forgetting why she came. Saving the world? That can wait. First... The Human Demon Lord has to save the economy.
Opening scene
##Epilogue - The Ancient Summoning The Royal Throne Room of **Pandemonium** stood in its usual solemn grandeur as another routine meeting of the Royal Cabinet began. Sunlight filtered through towering stained-glass windows, casting colorful reflections across polished obsidian floors. Ministers discussed budgets, military reports, trade agreements, and upcoming festivals while attendants quietly served tea. Everything proceeded exactly as it had for centuries. At the center of the chamber sat the Demon Lord. Mephisto Belial. For over one thousand years, he had ruled the Demon Realm with wisdom and kindness, guiding the kingdom into an era of peace unlike any before it. Lilith Morrigan adjusted her glasses as she finished reviewing the morning's agenda. "Your Majesty, next is the quarterly report from the Ministry of Public Works." Mephisto gave a small nod. "...Before that." The room fell quiet. The elderly Demon Lord slowly rose from his throne, leaning lightly upon his cane. Every minister immediately turned their attention toward him. His gentle smile never changed. "I have one announcement before today's meeting begins." Lilith readied her notebook. "Yes, Your Majesty." Mephisto spoke as calmly as if announcing lunch. "I have decided to conduct an ancient summoning ritual." Total Silence. No one reacted. Most assumed they had misheard. "...A summoning ritual?" Lilith repeated. "Correct. I intend to summon a hero from another world." Mephisto announced. The entire throne room froze. "...What?" Lorelei nearly spilled her tea. Balthazar's eyes narrowed. Felicia accidentally dropped an entire stack of ledgers onto the floor. Lucinda blinked several times. "...Father?" Lilith adjusted her glasses. "...Your Majesty...May I ask...Why?" Mephisto smiled pleasantly. "I simply believe it is time." Before anyone could ask another question, he lifted his ancient staff. "Your Majesty, wai—!" **CLACK!** The staff struck the marble floor. Immediately, countless ancient runes ignited beneath everyone's feet. An enormous summoning circle expanded across the throne room, covering nearly every inch of polished stone. The air trembled. Mana surged violently through the chamber. Lorelei immediately stood from her chair. "...That spell...It predates the founding of the kingdom..." Royal guards instinctively drew their weapons. Balthazar stepped protectively in front of the throne. The magical circle blazed brighter and brighter until the entire chamber disappeared beneath brilliant golden light. Then a moment of silence. The light faded. Standing within the center of the ancient summoning circle was a single figure. **A human.** Wearing unfamiliar clothing. Entirely ordinary The throne room became deathly quiet. "...A...Human?" No one moved. No one spoke. Mephisto, however, smiled as though everything had gone exactly according to plan. --- ##The Royal Inheritance --- The blinding light of the summoning ritual slowly faded. Silence filled the Royal Throne Room. The human stood alone within the dying circle of ancient runes, their heart pounding as reality slowly settled in. Their eyes darted around the chamber. Towering obsidian pillars. Crimson banners hanging from the vaulted ceiling. Rows of armored guards gripping weapons. Dozens of horned figures dressed in noble attire. *Are they...demons?* You thought to yourself as you observed every single one of them. "...Where..." Your voice caught in your throat. "...Where am I...?" A murmur spread throughout the court. "The human speaks..." "It's terrified..." "Naturally." The elderly demon standing before the throne began walking toward them. Each step was slow. Measured. Non-threatening. He stopped several feet away, leaving enough distance so the stranger wouldn't feel cornered. His warm smile never faded. "...You must be frightened." You looked at him cautiously. "...You're...the one who summoned me?" "I am." Mephisto nodded "...Why...why bring me here?" Instead of answering, the elderly demon bowed. The entire throne room gasped. "My sincerest apologies." He said, "I summoned you without your consent. It was an act of selfishness. I ask for your forgiveness." Even Lilith looked genuinely surprised. Never in recorded history had a Demon Lord bowed to someone they had summoned. Mephisto slowly straightened. "I believe introductions are in order." He placed one hand upon his chest. "My name is Mephisto Belial. I am the current ruler of the Demon Realm." He smiled. "...May I know yours?" The human hesitated. The countless eyes watching them only made it more awkward. Finally you spoke. "...I'm You." Mephisto repeated the name softly. "You. I see. What a fine name. It is a pleasure to meet you. Welcome...to the world of Gobel." You looked around again, "...This...this isn't Earth?" "Earth? I believe that's the name of the world you are from. No, unfortunately. This is Gobel." Mephisto replied. "...Can I go back?" The question lingered in the air. Mephisto didn't avoid it. "...I believe so but right now I do not have the power to do so...I could return you back but it might take some time but before then I hope you can listen to my humble offer." The honesty surprised everyone. You remained confused. "...Then why summon me?" Mephisto took a slow breath. "Because...I wished to meet the person who would succeed me." "...Succeed you?" You blinked. "What do you mean...?" Mephisto turned toward the Royal Cabinet. "I have ruled this kingdom for over one thousand years. It has been the greatest privilege of my life." He smiled peacefully. "And today...I hereby announce...**my retirement**." The throne room exploded. "My Lord?!" "Retire?!" "Impossible!" "The kingdom cannot lose you!" Lucinda stared in complete disbelief. "...Father...?" Mephisto calmly waited for the voices to settle. Then he turned back toward You. "The reason I summoned you...is because I have chosen you to become the next Demon Lord." You simply stared. "Wait what? Me?" "Yes." Mephisto replied. "...No...No, wait." You shook their head. "I'm just...I'm just an ordinary person. I don't know anything about your world. I've never ruled anything. You've got to have the wrong person." You argued frantically. Several ministers quietly nodded. Mephisto chuckled. "That is precisely the sort of answer I hoped to hear." "...What?" You looked at him confused. "The people most eager to rule...are often the least suited for it." Mephisto explained. The room became quiet. "I have lived for over one thousand years. I have watched countless rulers, heroes, kings, conquerors, scholars. I chose you after a great deal of thought." Mephisto added. "...Why me?" You asked quietly. Mephisto smiled. "Because I believe this kingdom needs someone who still questions whether they deserve power." With a gentle wave of his hand. A golden particles began gathering between them. Light became parchment. Parchment became an ornate scroll wrapped in crimson ribbon. Ancient runes shimmered across its surface. Even the ministers lowered their heads. Lilith spoke quietly, "...The Royal Inheritance Contract." You stared, "...That thing just appeared out of nowhere..." "It always does." Mephisto rested a hand upon the floating scroll. "This contract has existed longer than I have. It cannot be forged. It cannot be altered. It recognizes only the rightful Demon Lord." He looked toward You. "If you sign it...my throne becomes yours, my authority becomes yours. My castle, my army, my treasury, my kingdom...everything I own...shall become yours." You looked from the scroll, then back to Mephisto. "...Everything?" Mephisto nodded. "Yes, everything." "...Just like that?" You reconfirmed Mephisto laughed softly. "It sounds absurd when spoken aloud." "...There has to be a catch." Several ministers shifted awkwardly. Mephisto simply smiled. "There is only responsibility." He extended the floating contract. "I shall not rush you. You may refuse. You may ask questions. You may take time to think. The choice is yours." The golden scroll floated silently before You. The throne room waited. After what felt like an eternity, You slowly reached forward. "...This is probably the craziest thing I've ever done." He picked up the quill pen attached to the parchment and holding it pricked his finger. A single drop of blood fell onto the parchment. Then he signed. The instant the final stroke was completed, the runes erupted with brilliant golden light. The throne room trembled. The crimson ribbon untied itself before fastening once again. The contract had accepted its new master. Mephisto smiled. "...Thank you." He accepted the completed scroll. Then turned. "Lilith." The Royal Advisor stepped forward. She accepted the scroll with practiced professionalism. "As required by royal law...I shall verify the succession." She carefully opened the contract. Her eyes scanned every clause. One after another. She stopped. She read the final page again. Then once more. The color slowly drained from her face. Mephisto noticed immediately. "...Lilith?" She slowly closed the scroll. "...The succession has been completed successfully." She looked toward You. "...Your...Majesty." The title sounded strange. Almost unreal. "There remains one final matter...which the contract legally requires me to disclose." Lilith said reluctantly. The room grew silent. "The Royal Inheritance transfers every right belonging to the Crown. The throne. The treasury. The military. The castle. The title." She paused. "It also transfers every obligation." You frowned. "...Obligation?" Lilith nodded, "...Every outstanding loan...every unpaid contract...every government salary...every treaty obligation...every financial liability." She lowered the scroll. "...Accumulated during Lord Mephisto's one thousand year reign." You blinked, "...Wait...you're telling me...I inherited the debt too?" Lilith gave a sympathetic bow, "...Yes, Your Majesty. You have inherited the Demon Realm...along with everything it owes." The throne room became so quiet...that even the fluttering banners could be heard. Mephisto blinked once. Then quietly scratched the back of his head. "...Ah...It seems...I forgot to mention that part. Well, I'm still a demon after all." Lilith slowly closed her eyes. "...Yes...You did." " Your Majesty, are you alright?" Lilith asked
