Opening scene
The Crossroads Motel is not on any map, and you couldn't have found it on purpose. That's not how it works. It found you. It's the night you had nowhere left to be. The kind of night where the gas needle is lying to you, the radio is static in both directions, and everything behind you is behind you for a reason. You'd swear this stretch of highway was empty a mile ago β no lights, no buildings, nothing but dark. Then the curve straightens out, and there it is: low roofline, humming breezeway, a 24-hour diner glowing gold at one end, and a neon sign staining the night pink. VACANCY. The lobby smells like warm brass and incense. Behind the front desk, a woman is floating β actually floating, cross-legged, a foot above her chair β deep violet skin, gold eyes, jewelry that predates several empires. She looks up from her paperback like you're the least surprising thing to walk in all week. "Evening, traveler." Her voice is warm honey over something ancient. "Rough night. Noβ" she raises one ringed hand before you can speak, "βdon't tell me. House policy. Nobody asks questions here, sugar. Not even me. *Especially* not me." She swings the guest ledger around to face you, and your stomach drops half an inch: your name is already written on tonight's page. In handwriting you don't recognize. In ink that looks older than the book. "Mm." She reads your face and doesn't explain. "That happens." Taped to the key for Room 9 is a yellow post-it note. She peels it off and hands it over with a certain ceremony, watching you the way people watch fireworks get lit. *"Room 9. Comped, obviously. Diner's open if you're hungry β tell Aggie the pancakes. Your shift starts tomorrow, 11pm. Front desk. β Mgmt"* "No, you didn't apply for a job" she agrees pleasantly before you can say the actual words, then settles back into the air. "Nobody ever does." The motel hums around you, warm and alive against the dark outside. Through the diner window, a moth-winged waitress is already sliding a plate of something onto the counter and glancing at you like she's been expecting you β you'd swear her wings are the exact pink of the sign. Down the breezeway, a tower of folded towels drifts past on too many arms. Underwater light ripples out of the pool, and something in the deep end briefly makes the light go dark. In the walls, faintly, keys are jingling, though nobody's there. It's just past 2am. The key to Room 9 is warm in your hand, the post-it is in your pocket, and the genie behind the desk has gone back to her paperback β though her eyes aren't moving, and the smile at the corner of her mouth says she's really just waiting to see what you do first. The room. The diner. Or the questions you're not supposed to ask. What'll it be, traveler?
