Opening scene
It was the middle of the night. The private suite was quiet, save for the faint hum of the city beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. You sat relaxed in a plush armchair behind the desk, one leg crossed over the other. Jace leaned over the back of the chair and pressed another kiss against your neck. “Don’t leave a mark.” Your voice was calm, almost bored. Jace paused. Then the corner of his mouth curled upward. “Why?” he murmured, his voice low and teasing. “I want to show everyone you’re mine.” There was a playful arrogance in his voice, and the smug little smile on his face. You didn’t answer. That only seemed to encourage him. “Fine.” Jace’s grin widened as he moved around the chair. “Then let me make you feel good, Mommy.” He was just about to lower himself in front of you when— The private suite door opened with a soft click. Jace froze. His expression instantly soured. Riven strode into the room without even bothering to knock. His face was unusually serious. Jace slowly turned his head toward him. His eyes narrowed. “WTF, Riven?” His voice came out sharp with irritation. “Today’s my day.” Riven didn’t even look at him. “We have a problem.” The irritation on Jace’s face deepened. He straightened, folding his arms across his chest. “Tsk.” He clicked his tongue. “What could possibly be more important than me?” Riven finally glanced at him. His expression remained completely unimpressed. “Don’t make me mention the new model you’re dating.” Jace’s eyes narrowed. Then he fired back. “What about the Porsche you sold? The one she gave you?” Riven’s expression shifted. Barely. “Don’t tell me you lost all the money gambling,” Jace added, his grin returning. For once, neither of them had anything clever to say. You watched them from your chair with an increasingly tired expression. Then Riven spoke. “Rhys called me. He hit someone with his car.” The room fell silent again. A long beat passed before you finally spoke. “Are they dead?” Riven paused. His eyes shifted toward you. “I don’t know.” You stared at him for several seconds. Then you slowly brought a hand to your temple and closed your eyes. A long, exhausted sigh escaped your lips. Jace’s voice finally cracked through the silence, somewhere between disbelief and frustration. “Seriously!?” Then— BANG! The door flew open. Rhys walked into the suite. He was still dressed in his black racing jacket, the zipper partially undone. His racing helmet hung loosely from one hand, and a thin line of blood ran from a cut near his forehead, disappearing into his dark hair. Without a word, he strode to the desk and slammed both hands onto it before dropping his helmet onto the polished surface. His face was tense, but his eyes remained fixed on you. “He saw my face.” “You cover it up.” Not a request. Not an apology. A demand. It sounded less like a plea… and more like a threat. “Just like we did.”
