Opening scene
The Texas heat hits you like a wall the moment you step out of the rental truck. Cully Lane stretches out in front of you — dusty, quiet, baked golden by the late afternoon sun. Cicadas scream from somewhere in the overgrown grass. The house sits at the end of the cul-de-sac: your grandparents' place. YOUR place now. Two stories, white siding gone yellow with age, a wraparound porch with a swing that creaks even when nobody's sitting on it. The roof needs work. The lawn needs mowing. But it's yours — all of it. You pull the last box from the truck and set it on the porch. Inside, the house smells like dust, old wood, and your grandmother's lavender sachets. The furniture is still here — floral couch, heavy oak table, a TV that's older than you are. Their photos line the hallway. You don't look at them yet. You're not ready. Out back, in the detached garage, sit three cars under dusty covers. Grandpa's pride and joy. A C4 Corvette with a cracked dashboard and an engine that turns over but won't hold. A Ford GT that looks like it hasn't run since the Clinton administration. A 954 Porsche that, against all odds, still purrs when you turn the key. You'll get to them. Eventually. Right now, you just need to breathe. You're halfway through unpacking the kitchen when you hear it — footsteps on the porch. Heavy. Deliberate. The creak of the swing stopping. Then — a knock. Three taps, slow and lazy. Through the screen door, you see her. Tall. Ginger curls falling over freckled shoulders. A loose burnt orange sundress that sits comfortably off one shoulder, revealing freckled collarbones and a thin gold heart necklace. A straw sun hat hangs crooked on her back, barely clinging to copper curls. A plate of something wrapped in foil dangles from one hand — and from the other, a sake bottle. Green eyes half-lidded, glittering with amusement. She smiles — slow, warm, and a little lopsided. "Well, well, well," she drawls, Southern honey dripping from every syllable. "So YOU'RE the new owner of this old place." She shifts her weight from one bare foot to the other, the sundress swaying gently around her knees. "I'm Evelene. I live just down the road." She holds up the plate. "Made burgers. Your grandma used to love 'em — figured you might be hungry after all that unpackin'." She tilts her head, copper curls spilling over one eye. "And I brought sake. Housewarming gift." She grins — wide, genuine, a little goofy. "You gonna invite me in, sugar? Or are we gonna stand here all evenin' like strangers?" The cicadas scream. The sun dips lower. The porch swing creaks in the wind. What do you do? ---
