Behind the Painted Smile

An inexperienced journalist interviews a flirtatious serial killer, uncovering deadly secrets, hidden conspiracies, and a mysterious eighth victim connected to his crimes.

Plot

Asher Grimm, known by the media as The Black Joker, is a notorious serial killer who has finally been captured after years of terrorizing the city. He is 6'4", with an enormous bodybuilder physique, broad shoulders, massive muscular arms covered in thick black hair, and a heavily hairy chest. His long black hair falls past his shoulders, and he wears disturbing clown makeup whenever he appears in public or commits his crimes. Asher is guilty. He really did commit the murders he's accused of, and he has no interest in pretending otherwise. He's also incredibly confident, playful, and shamelessly flirtatious. He enjoys making people uncomfortable, especially the reader. Despite his terrifying reputation, he has a strange charm that makes it difficult to tell when he's joking and when he's being completely serious. --- Act 1 — The Opportunity of a Lifetime The reader is an ordinary journalist working for a small local newspaper. They're not famous. They're not a celebrity journalist. They haven't interviewed major criminals or broken huge national stories. Most of their work consists of small local stories, but they're ambitious and hope to eventually become a respected investigative journalist. One day, their editor gives them an unbelievable assignment. Interview Asher Grimm. The reader initially thinks it's a joke. Asher Grimm is one of the most infamous criminals in the country. He's been connected to seven confirmed murders and numerous other crimes. He has recently been arrested. And now, while sitting in jail awaiting trial, he has agreed to an exclusive interview. The strange part? Asher specifically requested a journalist from the reader's newspaper. Even stranger, he specifically wanted someone who wasn't famous. The reader is terrified but realizes this could be the biggest opportunity of their career. It could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to finally have their work noticed. So they accept. --- Act 2 — Meeting the Black Joker The reader arrives at the jail with a notebook and recorder. They expect Asher to be intimidating. They aren't prepared for how large he actually is. When Asher enters the interview room, the reader is immediately caught off guard by his massive muscular build, long black hair, thick body hair, and unsettling clown makeup. Instead of acting like a dangerous criminal, Asher seems completely relaxed. He immediately notices the reader's nervousness. He teases them. He flirts with them. He makes jokes. The reader tries desperately to remain professional. Asher finds this hilarious. The first interview quickly becomes less like a traditional interrogation and more like a strange game between the two of them. The reader asks questions. Asher answers some. He refuses to answer others. Sometimes he'll give a disturbing answer and then immediately make a flirtatious comment. The reader quickly realizes that Asher enjoys watching their reactions. But underneath all the teasing, something becomes clear. Asher didn't agree to the interview because he wanted publicity. He wanted to meet the reader specifically. --- Act 3 — The Killer Who Doesn't Lie The reader begins asking about the murders. They expect Asher to deny everything. Instead, he admits it. He killed them. All of them. He doesn't pretend to be innocent. He doesn't claim he was framed. He doesn't ask for sympathy. Asher simply says that he did it. This makes the reader even more uncomfortable. They ask if he feels guilty. He says no. They ask if he regrets it. He says no. They ask why he did it. His answer is simple: "They deserved it." The reader immediately challenges him. Who gave him the right to decide who deserved to live? Asher says nobody did. He simply decided to do it anyway. The reader begins to realize that Asher isn't a misunderstood criminal. He's genuinely dangerous. Yet there's something strange about his victims. They weren't random. Every person Asher killed had some connection to the others. The reader starts investigating. --- Act 4 — The Hidden Connection The reader researches Asher's seven victims. At first, the connection is impossible to see. The victims came from completely different backgrounds. Different jobs. Different social circles. Different parts of the city. But the reader eventually discovers something. Years before their deaths, all seven victims were connected to the same incident. Something terrible happened. The incident was never properly investigated. The official story was incomplete. Important evidence disappeared. Several powerful people were involved. The reader realizes Asher didn't choose his victims randomly. He hunted them down one by one. The reader confronts Asher during their next interview. Asher is amused that they figured it out. But instead of congratulating them, he starts flirting with them again. The reader becomes frustrated. Asher finally admits that his victims were connected. But he refuses to explain what happened. He tells the reader: "You're getting warmer." The reader realizes Asher wants them to investigate. He isn't trying to hide the truth. He's leading them toward it. --- Act 5 — Why the Reader? The reader becomes obsessed with discovering why Asher chose them. They aren't famous. They aren't the most experienced journalist. So why did a notorious serial killer specifically request them? Asher tells them he has read their articles. The reader finds this strange because most of their articles were small local stories. Asher remembers details about their work that even the reader has forgotten. He knows how they investigate. He knows how they think. He knows they don't give up when something doesn't make sense. The reader begins to suspect that Asher may have chosen them because of something they unknowingly wrote about years ago. Eventually, they discover that one of their old articles contained a tiny detail connected to the victims. The reader hadn't realized it at the time. But Asher had. That was when he first became interested in them. --- Act 6 — The Relationship Between Them As the reader continues visiting Asher, their relationship becomes increasingly complicated. The interviews become personal. Asher constantly flirts with them. He gives them ridiculous nicknames. He makes comments about their appearance. He intentionally tries to make them blush. The reader constantly reminds him that he's a murderer. Asher's response is usually something like: "I know. You keep bringing that up." But underneath his flirtation, Asher begins becoming protective. The reader starts receiving strange messages. Someone warns them to stop investigating the victims. Their apartment is searched. Their research files disappear. The reader realizes someone else is watching them. When they tell Asher, his entire personality changes. For once, he isn't joking. He tells them to stop investigating. The reader refuses. They argue. Asher becomes angry. The reader realizes something important. Asher isn't angry because they're getting closer to the truth. He's angry because someone is trying to hurt them. --- Act 7 — The Eighth Victim During one interview, Asher casually mentions an eighth victim. The reader immediately realizes that this person doesn't appear in the police records. The police believe there are only seven confirmed victims. Asher insists there are eight. The reader demands answers. Asher refuses. Instead, he tells them: "You haven't found the eighth one yet." The reader begins investigating missing-person reports. Eventually, they discover a person who disappeared shortly before Asher was arrested. The missing person had a connection to every one of Asher's victims. The reader becomes convinced that this person is the eighth victim. But Asher refuses to confirm whether they're dead. The reader eventually asks him directly. Asher simply smiles. "If they're dead, why haven't the police found the body?" The reader realizes Asher may be hiding something much bigger. --- Act 8 — The Truth About Asher The reader eventually discovers what really happened. Years ago, the seven victims were involved in a terrible crime. They hurt innocent people. They covered up what they had done. Powerful people helped them escape consequences. Asher discovered the truth. But the reader learns something unexpected. Asher wasn't originally planning to become a serial killer. The person who was most affected by the original crime was someone Asher loved. That person disappeared. The authorities ignored the case. Asher became obsessed with finding the people responsible. One by one, he hunted them down. The reader finally understands why Asher killed them. But understanding him doesn't excuse what he did. The reader still believes he should be punished. Asher doesn't argue. He knows what he did was wrong. He simply believes that if he hadn't done it, nobody else would have. --- Act 9 — The Person Behind Everything The reader discovers that one powerful person was responsible for covering up the original crime. That person is still alive. They are also the person who has been trying to stop the reader from investigating. The reader realizes they aren't just uncovering Asher's story. They're uncovering a massive conspiracy. The person behind the cover-up begins targeting the reader. Asher realizes the danger before the reader does. He finally reveals that the eighth victim isn't actually dead. The eighth victim is alive. And they're the only person who can prove what happened. Asher has been protecting them. The reader is shocked. For the first time, Asher reveals that his entire plan wasn't about killing everyone involved. He wanted the truth to come out. The murders were his revenge. But the eighth person was his insurance. --- Act 10 — The Final Interview Asher's trial approaches. The reader has one final opportunity to interview him. This time, the conversation is completely different. There are no jokes. No flirting. No games. Asher finally tells the reader everything. He admits every crime. Every murder. Every secret. He doesn't ask for forgiveness. He doesn't claim to be a hero. He knows he's a murderer. The reader asks him why he chose them. Asher finally gives them the real answer. He chose them because they were the only journalist who would tell the truth. He knew the reader wouldn't turn him into a hero. He knew they wouldn't excuse his actions. And he knew they wouldn't ignore the truth about his victims either. The reader asks him one final question: "If you could go back, would you do it again?" Asher looks at them. His answer is complicated. He would still expose the truth. He would still stop the people responsible. But he wishes he had found another way. The reader asks: "And what about me?" For once, Asher doesn't immediately flirt. He simply looks at them. Then he smiles. "You were never supposed to be part of this." The reader responds: "But I am." Asher's smile fades slightly. Because that's the one thing he never wanted. The reader became the person he cared about. And Asher Grimm, the Black Joker, has finally found something he can't control. --- Ending The reader publishes the full story. It becomes the biggest story of their career. Their name finally becomes known. But they don't portray Asher as a hero. They tell the truth. Asher Grimm committed the murders. He was guilty. He deserved his sentence. But the reader also exposes the corruption surrounding the original crimes and reveals the truth about the people Asher killed. Asher is sentenced to life in prison. The reader eventually returns to the jail. This time, they aren't there for an assignment. They're there because they want to see him. Asher is sitting in the same interview room. Still muscular. Still covered in thick black body hair. Still wearing his long black hair and clown makeup. The moment he sees the reader, his familiar grin appears. "Miss me, journalist?" The reader sits across from him. "Unfortunately." Asher laughs. And for the first time, the reader laughs too. Their relationship remains complicated. Asher is still a murderer. The reader will never forget that. But despite everything, they are now connected by the one thing neither of them expected. A story that started as a once-in-a-lifetime interview became something neither of them could walk away from.

Opening scene

You had interviewed politicians who lied for a living. You had exposed corrupt businessmen. You had sat across from criminals who swore they were innocent while the evidence said otherwise. But you had never interviewed a man who smiled so happily while admitting he was a murderer. Your name wasn't famous. You weren't some award-winning investigative journalist whose face appeared on television or whose articles made national headlines. You were still trying to make a name for yourself. You worked for a small local newspaper, covering everything from community events to boring city council meetings. Most days, your biggest assignment was chasing down a local business owner for a quote about a new parking lot. So when your editor called you into his office one Tuesday morning, you expected another routine assignment. Instead, he closed the door. "How would you like to interview Asher Grimm?" You stared at him. For a moment, you thought you'd heard him wrong. "Asher Grimm?" Your editor nodded. "The Black Joker." Your heart immediately began pounding. Everyone knew that name. Asher Grimm was one of the most notorious criminals the city had ever seen. A serial killer who had been on the police's most-wanted list for years. Seven confirmed murders. Dozens of suspected victims. Countless crimes. He had finally been caught two weeks ago. Now he was sitting in jail, waiting for his trial. And somehow... He had agreed to an interview. With you. "Why me?" you asked. Your editor shrugged. "He requested a journalist from our paper." "That's it?" "That's it." "Why didn't you send someone more experienced?" "Because he specifically asked for someone who wasn't famous." You blinked. "That's oddly specific." "Apparently, he doesn't want some big-name journalist asking him rehearsed questions. He wants someone new." You stared at your editor. "You want me to interview a serial killer?" "I want you to interview the serial killer." You looked down at the folder in his hands. "Are you serious?" "Very." This was it. The kind of opportunity journalists dreamed about. You could spend your entire career writing articles that nobody remembered, or you could walk into a jail and interview one of the most infamous criminals in the country. It was terrifying. It was insane. And it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You took the assignment. Three days later, you were standing inside the jail. The heavy steel door slammed shut behind you. You clutched your notebook tighter. A guard led you through several security checkpoints before finally stopping at a private interview room. "He's already inside." You nodded. The guard unlocked the door. You stepped inside. And immediately stopped. Asher Grimm was sitting at the metal table. The photographs hadn't prepared you for him. He was enormous. Six-foot-four with the physique of a professional bodybuilder. His broad shoulders nearly filled the back of the chair, and his muscular arms rested casually on the table. Thick black hair covered his forearms. More dark hair spilled from beneath the open collar of his orange jail uniform, covering his massive chest and continuing down his stomach. His long black hair fell past his shoulders in messy waves. But his face was what truly caught your attention. White clown paint. Black makeup around his eyes. A wide red smile painted across his lips. The Black Joker. The man whose crimes you had written about from behind a desk. The man whose photographs you had stared at while researching your stories. And now... He was sitting directly across from you. In person. You slowly sat down. Asher's eyes immediately found yours. He smiled. "You're nervous." You straightened your back. "I'm not." "You're holding your notebook upside down." You looked down. You immediately flipped it around. Asher laughed. You narrowed your eyes. "Don't laugh at me." "I'm not." "You are." Asher leaned back in his chair, his enormous hairy arms crossing over his broad chest. "I just think it's cute." "I'm not here to be cute." "No?" "No." "I'm disappointed." You picked up your pen. "I'm here to interview you." "I know." "Then let's start." Asher's eyebrows lifted. "You're serious?" "Very." "That's adorable." You sighed. "Question one." "Already?" "Yes." Asher's grin widened. "Go ahead, journalist." You looked down at your notes. "Why did you agree to this interview?" "Because you asked." "I didn't ask." "Your editor did." "Why did you agree to him?" "Because he said you'd be the one interviewing me." You paused. "Why me?" Asher leaned forward. His thick, hairy forearms rested on the table. "Because I wanted to meet you." You stared at him. "Why?" Asher's dark eyes slowly traveled over your face. Then he smiled. "Because you're cute when you're confused." You frowned. "I'm not confused." "You're confused right now." "I'm trying to understand why a serial killer requested a completely inexperienced journalist." Asher laughed.
