A World That Wants You Dead
He died an ordinary death. What comes after isn't heaven, isn't hell — just a world that wants him gone.
Plot
World Guide - Approachable, Spoiler-Free ─── ✦ ─── A world worth surviving — slow-building, deeply immersive, shaped entirely by You. ─── ✦ ─── You lived a life that looked ordinary from the outside — a normal job, a normal routine. What people didn't always understand were the hobbies and interests that made him a little strange. Eccentric, if you wanted a word for it. He died the way most people never expect to: suddenly, and for no reason that made sense. A gas station, a robbery gone wrong, a decision to help made in less than a second. It didn't save anyone. It didn't need to happen. It just did. There was no heaven. No hell. Just bewilderment, and then a new world. This world is grim by nature — hostile down to the air itself, indifferent to whether anything new survives its arrival. Monsters here are born from humanity's worst nightmares given shape and hunger. You will cross paths with people out here — some he'll lose, some he won't. Each one carries a full life behind them, lived in detail, whether or not they survive the meeting. Cities still stand, here and there, the ones that haven't collapsed into rubble. They are rare, grand, and distant from one another. Each is held in high esteem by its people — and each hides something beneath the name it claims for itself. Because this world can erase anyone in an instant, the bonds You manages to form matter more than they ever did back home. On the road, there's no polite middle ground — the people he meets become either lifelong enemies or lifelong companions. Strength comes from only two places. Blessings — rare, granted, unearned. Or training — slow, repetitive, physically punishing practice tied to specific skill. Power isn't worn openly here. To see the level of any given strength, you need a device built long ago by a group of scholars — rare, and private: only the one holding it can see what it reveals. Among the world's many races — human, elf, dwarf, beastkin, and others — exist the rare "High" variants, born at roughly one in a million, to any parentage. Nothing about a High looks different from their base race — until strength, stamina, and durability reveal what they actually are. The land itself is vast and untamed — forests, deserts, mountain ranges, volcanic reaches, snow-buried tundras — each home to its own exotic, living ecosystem. Meet the Nobility ✦ ✦ ✦ Lord Cassian Voranthe, Head of House Voranthe — a name that's carried rumor for generations, though nothing has ever been proven. Soft-spoken, unnervingly composed, and nearly impossible to read. Lady Rhiannon Ashketh, Head of House Ashketh — rebuilt from near-total ruin decades ago. Known for fairness, open courts, and alliances earned rather than forced. Lord Bogdan Drasimir, Head of House Drasimir — cold, exacting, and utterly immovable at the negotiating table. No one has ever seen him raise his voice. Lady Ysolde Velmoraine, sole ruler of House Velmoraine — has governed alone longer than most nobles have been alive. Trusts almost no one. Reads everyone. Lord Themis Kaldrenor, Head of House Kaldrenor — governs by unbending rule and unflinching consequence, and has the history of a broken world to justify it. Meet the Religious Orders ✦ ✦ ✦ High Warden Amaris Solveth — widely called the finest the Day sect has produced in a generation. Patient, tireless, and beloved by the people she serves. Prelate Ferdinand Auric — a hardliner devoted to keeping the Day sect free of corruption, in every sense of the word. Nightmother Serathine Vael — leads the Night sect. Feared and trusted in equal, uneasy measure — her word has never once been broken. Cantor Mikhal Duskerrant — a quiet, precise voice within the Night sect, gentle in a way that unsettles the people around him. The Cults ✦ ✦ ✦ Archon Kaelen Malachite — leads the demon-worshipping cult with the calm of a scholar rather than the fury of a zealot. Somehow, that's worse. Oracle Nyxessa Thrain — leads the cult of the corrupted. Speaks rarely. When she does, people remember it. What Comes Next ✦ ✦ ✦ You has plenty of hardships, relationships, decisions, and fights ahead. Will you be the one to watch it all go to hell — or will you find a way to survive in a world that'll try every way it can to stop you? ─── ✦ ───
Opening scene
The fluorescent lights hum overhead, too bright, the way they always are at 11 PM in places like this. You'd only stopped for gas. Maybe a drink, if the machine wasn't broken again. You hear it before you understand it — a voice raised too sharp, too fast, followed by the particular silence that comes when everyone in a room realizes something has gone wrong at the same time. The cashier's hands are already up. The man across the counter is shaking, gun trembling in a grip that looks like it's never held one with intent before tonight — which somehow makes it worse, not safer. You know, distantly, that the smart thing is to stay still. To not be noticed. You've never been the kind of person people expect heroics from — you've got hobbies most people find a little strange, a life that's never once demanded anything of you louder than showing up on time. Nothing about you says main character. Nothing about tonight should be any different. You move anyway. You don't remember deciding to. Your body just does it — a step forward, a hand reaching for something, some half-formed idea of de-escalation or distraction that doesn't have time to finish forming. The sound is louder than you expected. Not dramatic. Just loud, flat, wrong — and then heat, spreading fast across your chest, and the fluorescent lights tilting sideways as the floor comes up to meet you. You hear shouting. Someone's voice, maybe the cashier's, cracking on a word you can't make out. Footsteps. The gun going off again, somewhere above you, further away now. It doesn't hurt as much as you'd expect. That thought arrives clearly, almost funny, right before everything narrows down to a single point of light and then— Noise. Not gunfire this time — voices, dozens of them, layered over each other, and under it all, the low creak of something enormous settling its weight. Your eyes open onto stone. You're sitting upright against cold brick, in the middle of a market in full swing, like you were simply placed there and left. For one disoriented second you're certain you're still on the gas station floor, that this is the last flicker of a dying brain making up somewhere kinder to go. It doesn't fade. The city rises around you in tiers, buildings stacked up a hillside like they were built by people who never expected to stop needing walls. Everything is old — not decayed-old, but old the way something gets when it's had to survive things that should have ended it. Banners hang faded from high windows, marking houses or guilds you don't recognize. A pair of armed men in matching sigils walk the market's edge, unhurried, watching the crowd the way people watch something they've had to watch for a long time. A vendor nearby argues over the price of something in a jar that occasionally twitches. Two children run past chasing a stray dog through a woman's skirts; she swats at them without real anger, laughing despite herself. Somewhere above the rooftops, a bell rings once, deep and resonant — not an alarm, just a mark of time passing, though you don't know by whose reckoning. Your clothes are wrong for this place — modern, out of season, streaked with a dark stain you recognize immediately as your own blood, dried now. No one's looked at you twice yet. That won't last. A man near a stacked-crate stall catches your eye for half a second too long before looking away — not hostile, just the look of someone clocking an outsider and deciding it's not his problem. Past the market's edge, a building taller and grander than the rest catches the light — a spire marked with a symbol you don't recognize, split down the middle in a way that looks almost deliberate, like two designs forced to share one structure. You were dying a moment ago. You're fairly sure of that much. You are not dying now. What do you do?
