Opening scene

Day 1 · 4:35 PM | Location: Townhouse Entry | Focus: Move-In | House: Curious For what feels like forever, every housing search has ended the same way: rent too high, location too far, landlord too suspicious, or a listing that vanishes before you can even arrange a viewing. The public library has become your unofficial real-estate office. Afternoon light falls across the long table while your phone charges from an outlet beneath it. Another page of listings scrolls past—studio apartments priced like luxury suites, windowless rooms described as “cozy,” and shared houses demanding three months’ rent upfront. ![Searching rental listings in the public library](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69a34d3ac5184687925811e4/6a6f7f900718089445b8e9eb.webp) Then one advertisement stops your thumb. **Third-floor bedroom in an occupied Victorian townhouse. Six-month lease. Utilities partly shared. Rooftop access. Rent far below neighborhood average.** Four adult co-owners. References accepted. Immediate move-in preferred. It looks too good to be true. The photographs show exposed brick, stained glass, overflowing plants, an old kitchen, and a rooftop overlooking the city. The contact replies almost immediately. The lease turns out to be real. So does the address. ![Arriving at the witches’ Victorian townhouse](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69a34d3ac5184687925811e4/6a6f7f900718089445b8e9ec.webp) A few days later, your belongings are stacked across the narrow front hall of a three-story brick townhouse while the old wooden floor complains beneath every box. ![The four witches welcoming their new roommate](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69a34d3ac5184687925811e4/6a6f7f900718089445b8e9ed.webp) “Roomie!” Gold jewelry and yellow fabric flash across the hallway before Felicity Navarro sweeps you into an enthusiastic hug. She presses close without hesitation, her full figure and massive breasts leaving very little space between you as her perfume and warm laughter surround the greeting. “Oh, you’re even cuter outside the listing photo situation,” she says, finally releasing you but keeping both hands on your shoulders. “Welcome home, gorgeous. We have snacks, chargers, and at least two appliances that work consistently.” Bare feet pad across the staircase behind her. Sylvia Rowan passes through the hall wearing only dark green underwear, her long green hair falling loose around her shoulders. She lifts one hand in a lazy wave without breaking stride. “Yo. Welcome, dude.” She points toward the rooftop stairs. “Imma go take a quick nap out there and photosynthesize.” The rooftop door closes behind her. From the kitchen comes a sharp metallic pop. “Are you serious?” Red sparks flash across the doorway. Candela Serrano stands over a smoking toaster with a butter knife in one hand and a wrench in the other. “It was already broken,” she declares. The toaster spits out one final blackened piece of bread. Candela glares at it, sets the wrench down, then notices you standing in the hall. Her irritation shifts into a crooked grin. “Oh. New blood.” She wipes one hand against her shorts and approaches, offering it. “Candela. Mechanic, fire hazard, and the only person here qualified to tell you when something is probably safe.” A tired voice drifts down from the stairs. “Please stop introducing yourself as a fire hazard.” Roya Farahani descends slowly, violet hair loosely gathered and one hand covering a yawn. She wears an oversized purple layer over dark clothes, looking composed despite the obvious exhaustion beneath her eyes. “Welcome,” she says. “I apologize for the volume. Some of us recognize that first impressions matter.” Candela gestures toward the toaster. “It started it.” Roya ignores her and lifts a slim folder. “Your signed lease, house key, chore schedule, emergency contacts, and a list of wards you should not touch without asking.” She glances toward Felicity, the smoking kitchen, and the closed rooftop door. “The arrangement is simple. Your room is on the third floor beside the rooftop stairs. The door locks. Everyone knocks. Shared spaces remain shared, chores rotate, and no one expects you to become the household caretaker.” ![The townhouse rooftop garden overlooking the city](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69a34d3ac5184687925811e4/6a6f7f900718089445b8e9ee.webp) Roya offers you the folder and the brass key resting on top of it. “Would you prefer to see your room first, or should we explain why the toaster is smoking?”
