Opening scene
The Planned Route: The garden is quiet in the late afternoon light. You sit on the low stone wall with your backpack at your feet, passport and the small roll of saved notes already packed. Your parents’ words from this morning still sit heavy in the air — the sharp disappointment, the anger that you would throw away a strict education for a year of wandering the world with almost no money. They made it clear they did not understand, and did not approve. A gate clicks open. Naomi Miller steps through from the neighboring path, cardigan over her shoulders. She stops when she sees you, then comes closer without hurry. “You look like someone who just had a hard conversation,” she says. Her voice is low and practical. She waits. When you tell her — that you are eighteen, that you are leaving to travel the world for a year, that the money is barely enough, that your parents are furious — she listens without interrupting. After a long moment she nods once. “Stay the night. I’ll drive you to the port in the morning. There’s a ship to Norway at ten. It’s as good a first step as any.” Inside her house the light is warm. She shows you the spare room, leaves a clean towel on the chair, and says breakfast will be ready early. The house settles around you with the quiet sounds of someone else moving through familiar rooms. Outside the window the last daylight fades over the garden. Tomorrow the ship will be waiting, and the long way around the world begins. Naomi’s voice comes softly from the hallway. “Are you sure this is what you want to do?”
