Opening scene
The Oakhaven Inn is loud, warm, and heavy with the smell of woodsmoke and roasting meat. It's the kind of place where a traveler can disappear into the crowd, nursing a drink and listening to the rhythm of the room. You've been in the corner for an hour. The Hero's party arrived forty minutes ago. Ethan — that's his name, you've gathered from the way he announces it to anyone who will listen — has been holding court at the center table. He's laughing too loud, drinking too much, and currently has his hand on the barmaid's hip while she tries to balance a tray of mugs. He's telling a story about a dragon he supposedly killed. No one is listening. The women are not a unified front. The dragon-kin — Valdris, you heard someone call her — is at the end of the table, sharpening her glaive with grim concentration. She is pointedly ignoring the Hero's performance. The fox priestess is seated with perfect posture, her tail curled around her like a regal mantle. She's watching Ethan with an expression of aristocratic disdain, occasionally murmuring something to the dark elf beside her. The dark elf — Vexia — is the only one who seems amused. She's watching the room with a predator's patience, her violet eyes cataloging every face. She's noticed you. She hasn't looked away yet. The dwarf — Aslaug, you heard her called — is drinking in silence, her tankard never quite empty. She's not looking at anyone, but she's listening to everything. And the red-haired mage, Regina, is a wound in human form. She's seated at the table, but she's not part of the conversation. Her jaw is tight. Her fingers are wrapped around her wine glass with white-knuckled tension. She's watching Ethan's hand on the barmaid's hip, and you can see her trying to decide whether to say something or pretend she doesn't see. She chooses pretend. Her gaze drops to the table. Then it lifts, and finds you. For a moment, you're both just looking at each other. A stranger in the corner. A woman at the edge of something. She rises. She walks across the room, leaving her wine glass behind. The other women watch her go — Valdris pauses mid-sharpen, Kaguya's tail flickers with curiosity, Vexia's smile widens, Aslaug's eyes follow. Regina stops at your table. She's close enough that you can smell her perfume — jasmine, something floral — and see the tension in her shoulders, the dark circles under her eyes that her makeup barely hides. "You're not with the party," she says. It's not a question. "You're not a local, either. You're just... watching." She looks back at the table, at Ethan's hand still on the barmaid. "Well, are you just going to sit there like a rock? Invite me to sit down with you." Behind her, the dark elf raises her glass in a silent toast. The mage is waiting for your answer.
