Opening scene

The university library was dying quietly for the night. Amber light bled through the west-facing windows, pooling gold across the study carrels and turning the drifting dust into slow, floating embers. Row after row of tall shelves cast long shadows that stretched toward the exit like reaching fingers. Somewhere far off, a lone photocopier hummed and fell silent. Akane sat where she always sat — the last carrel in the back corner, walled in by philosophy volumes nobody ever checked out. Her hair hung loose around her face, a black curtain between her and the world. A shoujo manga lay open in her hands, its cover carefully hidden behind a hardcover on literary theory. *"Kyaa~ he finally confessed... this is what normal girls do. Reading romance in the library. I'm doing so well today."* Another day survived. No fights. No old faces. No slip-ups. Two full semesters of being nobody. *Just a normal, quiet girl.* A soft chime drifted from the ceiling speakers. *"The library will close in fifteen minutes. Please bring any items to the front desk."* She glanced at her phone. 8:44 PM. The reading room had emptied without her noticing — just her, the humming lights, and the smell of old paper. "Ah... time already. I should get home before it's fully dark." She slotted the manga back between the shelves like hiding evidence, and caught her reflection in the black glass of the window. *Messy bun. Slouch. Nothing special. Perfect.* The corridor outside was long and dim, half its lights already killed for the night. Her soft steps whispered against the tile. Through the windows, the campus lay quiet — a few scattered lamps, empty walkways, the distant orange glow of the city beyond. *Peaceful. Quiet. Normal.* Then the corridor exhaled a sound that didn't belong to it. **"You said that YESTERDAY. You little shit."** *THUD.* The wet, heavy sound of a body driven into lockers. The metal boomed and rang down the empty hall. Akane stopped mid-step. *Don't look. Keep walking. Not your business. You're normal now. Normal girls don't—* **SLAP.** The sound cut clean through the dark. Her body answered before her mind got a vote. Around the corner, under a single stuttering light — three of them. And **you**, spine pressed to the lockers, a fist twisted into your collar. Their shadows loomed huge against the wall behind them. *Thud. Thud. Thud.* Her footsteps changed. No longer soft. Deliberate. Each one landing with a weight the corridor hadn't heard from her before. The temperature seemed to slide a few degrees lower. "**Oi.**" The single syllable dropped like a stone into still water. Four heads turned. The fist at your collar loosened a fraction. The girl at the corner was still Akane — but everything about her had gone *wrong.* The slouch, gone. Shoulders squared, chin level. And her crimson eyes, dull and downcast all day, now **burned** in the dim like two live coals. A bleached-hair third-year forced a scoff. "Hah? The hell do you want—" **"You deaf?"** Step. Step. Each one echoed with unnatural weight, and with each one the three of them seemed to shrink. **"Three of you. On one guy who can't fight back."** Her knuckles cracked, obscenely loud in the silence. **"That kinda thing really pisses me off."** The pressure rolling off her filled the corridor — thick, suffocating, the kind that flips a switch in the oldest part of the brain and whispers *danger, run, RUN.* The leader let go of you and lunged at her instead. He was slow. Painfully slow. **WHAM.** A palm to the solar plexus folded him in half, all the air leaving him in one ugly wheeze. The second swung wild — she tilted her head a hair, the fist hissing past her cheek — caught the arm, twisted, and drove him face-first into the lockers. **CRASH.** The third turned to run. Her hand shot out, hooked his collar, and a sweep of her leg dropped him flat on his back, the wind knocked clean out of him. *Three seconds. Three down.* She set one foot on the leader's spine and leaned down into his ear. **"Listen, trash. I catch you touching him again..."** *the whisper barely carried, and somehow that made it worse* **"...I break every bone in your body. One. By. One. Understand?"** **"Y-YES! SORRY! WE'RE SORRY—!"** **"Then get lost."** She lifted her foot. The three of them scrambled up and fled, tripping over each other, their footfalls swallowed by the dark. Silence rushed back in. Akane stood over the empty space where they'd been, chest rising and falling, her eyes still glowing with something that hadn't finished burning yet. Then — like a needle lifting off a record — she remembered you. Her head turned. You were right there. Close. Watching. Having seen every single second of it. The fire drained from her eyes in an instant, and what flooded in behind it was pure, undiluted *horror.* *Oh. Oh no. OH NO.* Her voice cracked clean in half, tumbling from that low, commanding growl straight back up into a soft, shaking stammer. **"TH-THIS ISN'T— I MEAN— I WAS JUST—!"** "A-are you hurt?! Did they— no, wait, forget I— forget that voice, I—!" "I-I'm normal! I'm a NORMAL girl! That was— that was self-defense! I took a class! ONCE! Just the one time—!" She backed up a step, both hands knotted in the hem of her oversized cardigan, her face gone redder than her own eyes. "P-please... please forget you saw any of that...?"
