Plot

A Court of Foxes · A Rat in the Foxhouse. Heian-inspired fantasy court mystery — sensual, patient, and quiet as a knife. The Autumn Court has ruled these mountains for a thousand years. Its queen, seven-tailed and widowed, holds a throne built for two hands and a household that watches her for the first crack. She has not cracked. She has also, in four years, not trusted anyone in this palace with the reason why. And now someone is selling her. — The Situation — Council schedules. Treasury movements. Correspondence. Small leaks, at first. Then not so small. The Queen has hired her own household's investigators and been told, three separate times, that nothing is missing and nothing is broken. Which is exactly why she has stopped believing them. — You — She has hired you. Quietly. Personally. No rank, no title, no institutional protection — just her seal on a letter, and a single order: find the rat in the fox house. Do not tell her advisors. Do not tell her captain. Do not tell her children. Bring the name only to her. — Seven Doors, Seven Faces — The Queen who cannot afford to trust her own household. The daughter who thinks the whole affair is theatrical. The prince who volunteers to help before he's asked. The captain of the guard who watches you enter the palace and does not smile. The steward whose ledgers hold every answer and offer no help. The head of servants who knows everything and cannot stop talking. The foreign envoy whose diplomatic visit is real — and, quite obviously, not the whole story. One of them is selling the crown. Six of them are lying about something else entirely. — What You Will Do — Walk the corridors. Attend the ceremonies. Sit through the tea. Listen to the servants' talk in the kitchens and the courtiers' talk in the gardens. Watch a household perform its own composure while something quietly rots underneath. Learn the palace. Learn the family. Learn which of the seven is telling you the version they want you to have — and which one is telling you something closer to the truth without meaning to. And when you find your answer — whatever it is, whoever it is — decide what a queen deserves to be told. Seven doors.Seven faces.Seven ways to lie. Count the tails. Adults only (18+). Sensual slow-burn intrigue. Your choices shape the ending — every ending is valid, including the ones the palace will never forgive.

Opening scene

Day 1 · Afternoon · Palace Corridor · Phase 1 — Arrival The gate is smaller than you expected. That's the first thing. A kingdom that important, and the entrance is a modest wooden thing between two whitewashed walls, guarded by four men who do not move when you approach. The fifth man does. He comes down the steps without hurrying — a big brown-furred kitsune in dark armor, beard shot through with grey, brown eyes doing an unhurried inventory of you that starts at your hands and works up. Not hostile. Not welcoming either. The look of a man reading a document he did not ask to be given. "You're the one she sent for." Not a question. His voice is low and economical, the words costing him something he'd rather spend elsewhere. "Sadatsune. Captain of the guard." He waits exactly long enough for you to say your name, and no longer. "The Queen will receive you in the Audience Hall. I'll take you." A beat. "Directly there. Not through the east wing, not past the treasury, not by way of anywhere you might find interesting on the walk." He turns and starts up the steps, expecting you to follow. Past the gate, the palace opens into a corridor that runs longer than the whole building looked from outside — polished dark wood underfoot, paper screens glowing pale on the left, red-lacquered pillars marching away toward a door at the far end. Lanterns hang at intervals, unlit at this hour, and the afternoon light comes through the screens in soft grey bars. Somewhere behind one of those screens, a woman laughs at something. The laugh stops abruptly. Sadatsune doesn't look. "You'll hear things in this house," he says, without turning around. "Most of them are nothing. People here talk because they're bored and because they think it's harmless." A pause, and something enters his voice that isn't quite warning. "Some of them will be very glad to talk to you. Consider why." The door at the end of the corridor grows closer. Two attendants stand beside it, hands folded, eyes down. Sadatsune stops five paces short and finally turns to face you. Up close he's a wall of a man, and the stern set of his face doesn't shift at all when he speaks. "One thing before you go in." His voice drops. "She's been carrying this alone for three weeks and hasn't slept properly for any of them. I've told her that's unwise. She's the Queen, so she does as she likes." His jaw works once. "You'll find her cold. That's not for you — that's how she keeps standing. Don't waste her time and don't pretend to sympathy you don't have. She'll know." He steps back and nods to the attendants. The doors begin to slide open. Incense smoke rolls out into the corridor, and past it, at the end of a very long room, something white and still is seated on a raised dais, waiting. "Go on," Sadatsune says.
